Why are the Darklords well known?

This is a meta question. The way I see it, you either have to run Masque of the Red Death in a slightly alternate history where Frankenstein and Dracula are not well known critically acclaimed monsters from literature or you need to do figure out what or who is chronicling their histories and famous...

Re: Review thread of VRGtRL 5e

Nothri : From what I understand from your review, you don't see the new book as horrible just worse than the previous iterations. I would agree if it wasn't for the 4e. However, as I own large parts of the previous editions I will simply grab the useful parts I see from this book and domains I like...

Re: Review thread of VRGtRL 5e

This is the worst version of the Ravenloft Campaign Setting published to date. Understand when I say that I am not being hyperbolic or saying the book has no merit. In terms of providing advice to a new DM about running a horror game in 5th Edition or making use of the material provided it works jus...

Re: It is back!!! What we do know about VR Guide to Ravenlof

"You had me until you decided the Van Richten's Guides were in any way addressing and confronting the more problematic of the inherent cliches in gothic horror." If it makes you feel any better, if I still had you I would have tossed you back where you came from anyway. And yes, that is in...

Re: It is back!!! What we do know about VR Guide to Ravenlof

https://www.polygon.com/22417339/van-richtens-guide-to-ravenloft-harakir-ankhotep-the-mummy-preview Taking a moment to unpack this article. First, let's talk about derivative tropes, shall we? Ravenloft has always been based on a Gothic setting. Castle Ravenloft and Strahd Von Zarovich have their ro...

Re: Conjurers get the short shift in Ravenloft

Using the mist rather than the actual intended plane is possible, although it has subtler dangers.

A suggestion for the site

Nothing elaborate. I was going to suggest that the Ravenloft forum might be best served dividing 2-3rd edition Ravenloft from 5th edition ravenloft, since there are some non-trivial distinctions to be found in the settings.

Re: It is back!!! What we do know about VR Guide to Ravenlof

So I AM looking forward to this. It really does baffle though. You have this well established lore about the setting that has inspired whole generations of fans, and yet there seems to be this overt desire to throw out the whole thing and begin again. That makes sense in places, especially updating ...

Re: Stakin' Strahd

I've killed him in Expedition. We had like twice as many players playing as recommended and defeated him in an encounter and drove him back to his coffin. We raided it in daylight and somehow found him. He had no defenses or anything enacted. So we killed him. It was anticlimatic. Our DM kinda sucked.

You must specify a subject when posting a new topic.

Do you know where the Citadel Cavitius is originally discussed in the 1980s? Have me curious now. I was rereading Vecna Reborn because it had this little gem near the beginning. "The RAVENLOFT@ campaign setting exemplifies the gothic, macabre fear of the classic horror tales. It is suggestive r...

Re: The Burning Peaks

I never liked the Burning Peaks myself. Not because it was "high level" but because it was frankly far too fantastic to create a proper horror game out of. A big city inside a giant skull...not exactly being subtle there. But anyway....I have a solution for the enterprising DM who wants to...

Re: What happened to Pharazia?

The writer in me wants to make it more of a thing, like part of the domain is being hidden away by a Mist Djinn.

Also, I think genies should be corruptible by the demiplane like elementals are so things like Mist Djinn can exist.

What happened to Pharazia?

So this has been bugging me for a little while now. Island of Terror originally came with a poster map of the new domains it discussed, including Pharazia. The thing is, the domain it depicts versus the domain that appears as part of the Amber Wastes is...different. Part of it I understand- they had...

A brief question about the Black Keep in Feast of Goblyns

Ladies and gentlemen, I have a simple question. Is the Keep from Feast of Goblyns in which you meet Dr. Heinfroth meant to be his asylum or his home?
