Re: How do you decide how often you allow the PC's to gain magical items?

Be a slave only to the tales told at the table. I like low-magic Ravenloft. Magic is bad (and only fools and madmen flirt with it) Ravenloft. Robert E. Howard Ravenloft (as I like to think of it). Here's a handful of alternatives that I have used. The last one is one of my personal favourites. Worke...

Re: How can a Necromancer transport dozens of corpses?

As for a road or trail, just cut one. Literally. Animated dead chopped it down over a period of time and at night, and enchanted waymarker stones (of some sort) that cast the illusion of an unfelled forest, whathaveyou, are cleverly-hidden along the length of the trail. Another clue for the PCs to f...

Re: How can a Necromancer transport dozens of corpses?

Barrels by wagon. Bodies might or might not be pickled too. Travelling under the guise of merchant with a cargo of wine, only two casks are real, and they're "specially treated" to cause red-nosed snoops to fall into a quick and deep slumber. Memories are blurred just like a real binge, pr...

Re: What do you do about the languages issue?

For some reason it's not available on DriveThru, but the Ravenloft Player's Handbook (3.5) is. Weird.

Re: What do you do about the languages issue?

There is a whole page dedicated to this in the Ravenloft Dungeon Master's Guide. Optional Rules: Language Barriers Three options provided are: 1. No change. Characters need to improvise. Sink or swim. This is considered the "default" option. But keep in mind the whole line of 3E products i...

Re: The House on Gryphon Hill and Mordentshire's graveyard

As for graveyards, I can only find vague references of discriptions for the cemetery belonging to the House on Gryphon Hill, so you should be good to impose your creativity however you see fit and not worry about stepping outside of anything "official". If that's of any concern to you or a...

Re: The primary masquerade problem of a high-society vampire

Generally-speaking, I agree with you both. Yet at the same time it would be cool to throw a villain at players that has, by all appearances, overcome the inhibitions of their kiss/curse/whatever, and really rock it like an evolutionary step(or two)-up on their former kin. The absolutely shattered eg...

Re: The primary masquerade problem of a high-society vampire

The main issue remains: In the high society of a probably xenophobic domain of 40,000 people, the elite / high class may be 1000 at most, with the central town having probably 500 of them, including 4 year old kids and the 80 years old grandma. Everyone knows everyone and in most cases, they are xe...

Re: The primary masquerade problem of a high-society vampire

I strongly disagree and the reason is that a vampire cannot pass off as a human. It would be easier for a ghoul to do it, than a vampire. As a quick aside, and linked to this thread only through the theme of monsters impersonating humans... Or a ghul-kin: https://www.completecompendium.com/appendix...

Re: The primary masquerade problem of a high-society vampire

As someone who doesn’t play, I’ll admit my suggestions are probably out of left field sometimes, but I do wonder if it ruins vampires. Have you never stayed up late, woke up early, or pulled an all nighter? Perhaps the vampire incurs penalties of some sort the next day or days, but this is a necess...

Re: The primary masquerade problem of a high-society vampire

Just to get it out of the way, and speaking generally about vampires and their facade... As doctor Rudolph van Richten wrote in his treatise on vampires (VRGtV), "Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a 'typical' vampire". This simply-stated caveat should be applied to all that follows....

Re: The primary masquerade problem of a high-society vampire

Taking away one weakness (from a list of them) from one monster is not the same as creating infinite offence in another. Yeah, I'm personally biased towards changing bits of the game like that, so thought exercises that go against the grain come easy to me. Ain't nothing sacred in D&D. Whereas ...

Re: The primary masquerade problem of a high-society vampire

Taking away one weakness (from a list of them) from one monster is not the same as creating infinite offence in another. Such a tweak may lead to a need to re-balance, but then again, with player ingenuity, it may not. Only the DM knows. As for me, I don't like the fact that all clerics can turn und...
