Re: The Scale of Idealism VS Cynicsm in Ravenloft

Ravenloft isn’t Call of Cthulhu or World of Darkness. The horror in those comes from the fact you realise you are insignificant in the scheme of things, in CoC, or you are the monster and the horror comes from how you deal with it, in games like Vampire, Mage or Werewolf.

Ravenloft is the world ...

Ravenloft on Netflix?

https://share.google/YeoO3uxrqNFe0flV9

So I open my phone, and what do I see?
Netflix seems to be making a show about Strahd's backstory! I wonder how tied it would be to existing tellings like I, Strahd and how much it'd be its own thing.
Would you watch?
What other darklords would you want a TV ...

The Scale of Idealism VS Cynicsm in Ravenloft

Let's talk about the elephant in the room.
It's there in almost every discussion, and I think it's time to bring it up:
How much hope do you think should be 'allowed' in Ravenloft?
Of course we all are entitled to our opinions and everyone can do whatever they want at their table, but I'm asking ...

Re: The Problem With Outcast Ratings

This is a brilliant take! Shifting the mechanic from an inherent "Outcast Rating" to an "Open-mindedness" (or "Tolerance") stat makes total sense. It puts the narrative focus back on the society and the NPCs rather than mechanically punishing a player just for choosing a certain race. Your idea ...

Re: Lovecraftian inspirations from the real life, culture, history and science

Hi Adeptus, amazing stuff here!
Some thoughts I had:

- First thing first cause I had to get it out of the way: Percy Jackson & The Olympians didn't completely forget Typhon. Percy accidentally frees him* in book 4 - and in book 5 he's the threat the gods have to fight in while Camp Half Blood ...

The Problem With Outcast Ratings

Ravenloft is characterized as a very xenophobic setting. Not because of the writers' opinion, of course, but in a 'let's get into the head of characters who think differently than us' way. Most people in the Land of Mists aren't evil, but they've never been out of their hometown and rarely ever seen ...

Lucretia Vaerizocchi, the Dark Doctors’ Daughter - Alleigosto

While born into magical craft like the rest of her family, she always diverged from the rest of the dark doctors. She was disinterested in the specialty craft of “Thanatology” or an advanced form of necromancy specifically dealing ...

RL-themed subclasses that feel real

3e Ravenloft products hand out setting-specific prestige classes like candy. It's one of the things that shock me most as a 5e homebrewer reading through older material - I was taught that an entire new class is a big deal that takes two years to make and has to be playtested a gazillion times ...

Re: Guys I found a system that fixes the '5e is too OP for Ravenloft' problem (?)

Beyond the balance fix, I like this system for a narrative reason:
It makes 'reaching a safe place' a goal with a mechanical reward.

Like... Anyone read LoTR? The Hobbit?
If you read between the lines, you realise that the real beats of tension and relief aren't about whether or not the characters ...

Guys I found a system that fixes the '5e is too OP for Ravenloft' problem (?)

So...
A lot of people complain that Ravenloft can't work in 5e cause the PCs quickly grow too powerful to be scared of ordinary monsters. We can obviously use stronger monsters, but then you're no longer playing the relatively low-fantasy setting most of Ravenloft is supposed to be.

This has a ...

Re: Grim justice (or a horror moral)

A few years ago I was on a school trip to the desert, and my classmates kept loitering the place. I told them over and over again that a mountain goat might eat their snack bags and get suffocated, but they didn't listen.

So that night, around the campfire, I stopped the singalong and made up on ...

Before anyone else thinks it's a briiliant idea to write another darklord with a personality split...

The facts, as I understand them from my very basic research:

1) Dissociative Identity Disorder is caused by complex PTSD, usually from child abuse. You know how sometimes when people go through a traumatic event they just supress the memory so they won't have to deal with it, sometimes not ...
