Re: Aztec Death Whistle
That single whistle blown did eerily sound like multiple people screaming simultaneously. To me, such an item would definitely have necromantic properties. I'm thinking that the screaming sound would function as a banshee's scream, victims dying from this attack raise as undead controlled by the blo...

Re: [3e/PF] Fixing the NPC classes
I'm all for creating new NPC classes. I know that in several of the one-shot and full modules for the Kaidan setting of Japanese horror (PFRPG) , many of the NPCs are single NPC class and multiclass NPC class/PC class with many examples of experts and aristocrats in the mix. So I certainly use NPC c...

Re: A new approach to balancing the vampire template...
I'd say it was fixed in Pathfinder, just convert it back to 3x... Vampire Template CR +2. For pretty much anything PF, SLA is out the window as completely unnecessary and a detractive concept to have ever been introduced to the game.

Re: Monsters with class levels, what do you fear most?
Graveknights (deathknights) with Anti-Paladin (or Blackguard) levels (depending on whether its 3x or Pathfinder). Ghost spellcasters usually witches, sorcerers and bards, though divine casting druids, clerics, oracles and inquisitors are possible too. (My Haiku of Horror: Autumn Moon Bath House prod...

Re: Con-fit scenarios for RL or MotRD?
I know that my Kaidan setting of Japanese horror (PFRPG) is not your thing, however, in my opinion changing the Asian aspects of the adventures to a Euro-based or any other theme is hardly more difficult that removing the kimono and putting on T-tunic, the Asian aspects are little more than flavor, ...

Re: My problems with House of Strahd...
I ran the Castle Ravenloft adventure when it was first released as part of the original boxed set for Ravenloft in 1e, and through Strahd has appeared in several homebrewed Ravenloft adventures, I almost never run published adventures. 99% of the adventures I run are homebrewed so if I plan to inclu...

Re: Sri Raji Adventure
If I were doing a Sri Raji homebrewed adventure, I'd look at the Rakshasa listing in the Pathfinder bestiaries or d20pfsrd.com , there are some cool variant rakshasa, like an elephant headed rakshasa with multiple trunks - resembling Ganesha, and another with a crocodile head. Boardgamegeek.com show...

Re: Power Check failed?...Help
The paladin would have to actively and honestly perform an evil act to justify a powers check. If his party prevented him for acting on his code of conduct for fear for their own safety is not a reason to incur a powers check - and never would be. A paladin's alignment and code of conduct is an idea...

Re: Murder Mystery
In a lot of ways Haiku of Horror: Autumn Moon Bath House is a murder mystery as well as a ghost story, so I've even published a murder mystery short scenario. On an overnight stay at the bath house, the adventure party is accosted by a female ghost as a haunting/attack. In order to insure that the m...

Re: Darklord scapegoating.
Yeah, I'd think, except for rare individuals like Van Richten, the majority of inhabitants of Ravenloft, including its domain rulers, don't really know nor understand what a domain lord really is, what the dark powers are, and any real concept of how Ravenloft differs from any other world setting. F...

Re: The Skeleton Key
Well, not that you need to play Kaidan, but #30 Haunts for Kaidan , there's a magic item called a Skeleton Key, which is a normal skeleton key, when tied suspended to the hair of a recently dead person, all haunts in a 30' radius are detected, but the item also points the way to Kaidan (like a compa...

Re: The Skeleton Key
The first idea that popped in my head regarding a cursed key that magically opens most locked doors is that when the curse is activated, a portal to some darker realm opens (within close proximity to the user of the key) allowing a dark denizen to enter the world at your location. Its a key, right? ...

Re: Canon Rokushima Taiyoo Info?
Thanks for the mentions, Giamarga. Kaidan extensively uses the works of Koizumi Yagumo (Lafcadio Hearn) the author of Kwaidan, which the 1967 movie is based. In fact one of the shorts in Kwaidan - Mimi Nashi Hoichi (Hoichi the Earless) is the founding story to the Kaidan setting of Japanese horror (...

Re: Magic pistol question
Personally, I abhor the Weapons of Legacy rules. Weapons that grow with the players are all well and good, but I'm not a fan of having to pay X amount of gold to fulfill a story-related quest and to have penalties to skills or attacks because a weapon suddenly became better. Unfortunately, my versi...
