Re: Campaign Ideas & Questions

Expedition to Castle Ravenloft was a test balloon for the delve format of 4e, lining up encounters as pearls on a thread with not much choice once a thread has been picked. For a SaWo adaption, you can probably cut a lot of filler and speedbump encounters only intended as a way to gain XP in the 3.x...

Re: Homebrew: 5e Vistani Heritage and Gypsy Background

The clan bonuses are very uneven: Initiative (which is impossible to gain outside of some niche class features like the Bard's Jack-of-all-Trades) > Skills (sharply limited, can only be gained (rarely) through Multi-Classing and Feats) > Tools (can be gained at will through downtime, less commonly u...

Re: Paladin's alignment in Ravenloft

2E and/or 3E had the guideline that Clerics ignore the moral axis (Good – Evil) and are only bound by the Law/Chaos axis. In editions that restrict Paladins to certain alignments I do the same, as Paladins too are equipped by the Dark Powers in a similar way to Clerics. So yes, you can be a Lawful E...

Re: Dungeon hazards that Vampyres shrug off, but hurt humans

It was intense. This one decisive spell turned a guaranteed TPK into a dicey opportunity to save the day - and they managed to save themselves barely, with the charmed party members temporarily snapped out of their charm through PfE&G spells, slaying an inattentive vampyre guard with nothing but...

Re: Dungeon hazards that Vampyres shrug off, but hurt humans

I went with gnats. Sadly no one failed their save, but it sure kept the party on the toes and forced the ones making it to the chokepoint to quickly scramble too far into the vampyre lair and get them into a jam. They ended up in a very intense fight being cornered by the vampyres, with 2/3 of the p...

Dungeon hazards that Vampyres shrug off, but hurt humans?

System used is D&D 5e, although it shouldn't play a big role. For my Halloween game, I'm prepping a dungeon in form of a monster-infested tenement in one of the abandonded areas in Richemulot's Pont-a-Museau. One of the major factions in it are vampyres, who have walled of 1 1/2 floors for thems...

Re: Crosses as Holy Symbols?

RE " universal" holy symbol: That is an interesting notion. Nice and simple. It may work especially well in a Hammer Films + dungeon crawling sort of Ravenloft, light on specific religious matter but heavy on Gothic tropes. Just like the module that kicked it all off! :) "Three: The ...

Re: Crosses as Holy Symbols?

The Eternal Order has the Cross & Skull as a holy symbol, although it is always depicted as an equal-sided cross, not as the elongated one of Christianity. It is conceivable that a simple EO holy symbol could just be the cross itself.

Re: Help! Strange/monstrous PC: handling npc reaction?

As you play a 3.5 game, you could just slap an Outsider Rating on the character and have others react one step less friendly (see the NPC attitude chart under the Diplomacy skill), so the average NPC reaction would be Unfriendly. Market tenders will not allow him to touch their wares to not spoil th...

Re: I still do not fully understand Ravenloft..

Others have already mentioned it, but I think it deserves repeating: EtCR is a very different beast from the Ravenloft campaign settings, and contradicts it in several points (like with the halfling vistani). I tend not to beat around the bush about the type of the darklords if they are public figur...

Re: Duskblade and witch in 3.5 ravenloft?

Warlocks can be quite capable as the secondary half of a theurge build (either Eldritch Theurge for arcane or Eldritch Disciple for divine). Eldritch Blast and the invocations can cover a lot of re-occuring problems like hitting people, seeing invisible or flying without spending resources, while th...

Re: Duskblade and witch in 3.5 ravenloft?

Duskblades could simply be tied to Sithicus or Darkon if you care for the fluff about elves. As for the witch, why not simply a Cleric of Hala as a baseline? Make her a Cloistered Cleric from UA and exchange Magic Domain for Spell Domain (which gives you access to the Anyspell line, which is great f...
