Re: Ravenloft inspiring movies

Among the Hammer classics, both Captain Kronos (1974) and Countess Dracula (1971) a.) fit the era and b.) provide great examples of dark lord curses. I consider Kronos as the better film as a film overall, but Countess offers a built-in terror track from normal to darklord.

Re: Tips for Running Curse of Strahd

Over on Reddit someone ran a really good series of GM advice for CoS: https://www.reddit.com/r/DnDBehindTheScreen/comments/4gsjby/modules_what_i_have_learned_from_running_curse_of/ https://www.reddit.com/r/DnDBehindTheScreen/comments/4hkmut/modules_what_i_have_learned_from_running_curse_of/ https://...

Re: Should I allow Identify Spell?

In 3.5 Ravenloft, I honestly don't care much about Continual Light, not with all the Swordsages teleporting around every other round and all the other goofiness going on. I rather view 3.5 Ravenloft compared to AD&D Ravenloft (or 5e Ravenloft) as the same as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is...

Re: Help me: Ideas and concepts for an arcane spellcaster le

I've recommended Conjuration for the Immediate Magic ACF, not for the spells. Teleporting 10' as an immediate action Int mod times per day is good for mobility and even greater as life insurance. There are also plenty of good conjuration spells that aren't based on summoning. Grease, Glitterdust, Ev...

Re: Should I allow Identify Spell?

In 3.5 with its christmas trees and magic marts, Identify is a bread and butter spell that should be allowed. As for cursed items, keep the following in mind: An identify spell only has a 1% chance per caster level to reveal a cursed item’s true properties, including the cursed aspect. This is an ex...

Re: Help me: Ideas and concepts for an arcane spellcaster le

Here is a bare-bones, mechanics-only write up for a Warlock/Wizard/Eldritch Theurge for the first few levels: Race: Human Ability score priorities: STR -- DEX ++ CON + INT +++ WIS - CHA + Level/Feat planning: 1. Warlock (Complete Arcane) (F) Mortalbane (Book of Vile Darkness) (F) Point-Blank Shot Le...

Re: Help me: Ideas and concepts for an arcane spellcaster le

If your player isn't particularly familiar with the rules and has trouble reading them up, I would recommend one of the invoker classes (Warlock or Dragonfire Adept) that have only few spell-like abilities, but can spam them at will. DFA is overall stronger, while the Warlock plays nicely with the T...

Re: Do the Dark Powers love Cormyr for some reason?

Was Cormyr simply better fleshed out than the rest of the FR at that time by adventures etc.? The first FR box only came out in 1987 and was in 1990 still relatively sparsely described.

What if... RL had been a 1E Horrorpunk campaign setting?

Some of you might have heard of Mazes & Minotaurs - the "what if..." RPG that answers the question what would have been if Gygax and Arneson had based the world's first RPG on Greek mythology and Hercules technicolor films instead on medieval Tolkien Sword & Sorcery. The other nigh...

Re: Domain's Laws?

Note that the levels in the Black Box were for AD&D 2E, where most normal folks were simply level 0 (even exceptionally skilled people like Dr Mordenheim). Having even one level of fighter made you stand out among commoners, and a bunch of them could still wear down a higher level character. Tho...

Re: I need some good gothic material, items and ideas!

I wonder how did you find those things! those are really good :D. TotGaD has been one of the greatest sources of Gothic Horror OSR in the last few years. He also had an interesting remix of Ravenloft to remove some of the inconsistencies and make the hard to use domains like Keening actually playab...

Re: I need some good gothic material, items and ideas!

Jack Shear has compiled some very great PDFs from the stuff he has put out over the years: http://talesofthegrotesqueanddungeonesque.blogspot.de/p/links.html Tales of the Grotesque and Dungeonesque I-III are the files you want. The Gothic Earth compilation also has a lot of stuff that works well wit...

Re: 5E Lamplighter

The standard Lamplighter is essentially just an Inquisitive Rogue with the Watchman background.

I'd rather treat them as a Faction that employs a number of different characters (Rogues, Fighters, Monks etc.) rather then as a particular subclass.

This film has also been a heavy inspiration for some D&D spells. Watch it, and you will recognize a lot.

Re: Need help/advices with Great conjunction Adventures!

1) There are 3.5 versions of the adventures about great conjunction? Nope. Unless you care about balancing encounters according to the DMG, it shouldn't be too hard though. Specifically for Night of the Walking Dead, there was discussion on how to stat Madman Jean d'Tarascon as a viable encounter: ...
