Good source for Bluebeard's real life inspiration and werewolves too. :D

He most definitely wasn't a pirate.

I have used Strahd on 3 different occasions with 3 different parties: 1 They trespassed in Castle Ravenloft and got the choice between hunting down an ancient artifact or die. They got the artifact, woke the monster guarding it and lured the monster and its artifact into Barovia where Strahd "r...

That would be pretty nasty.

And this is just so bizarre that I had to add it:

A link to a pic of a kind of seatroll from coastal Norway: http://home.c2i.net/elysnes/draugen.html Link to a pic and old real life sea serpent sightings, unfortunately only in Norwegian. But the pic is over 400 years old so there's no copyright on it I believe. http://www.mjoesormen.no/deeldstebesk...

Come to think of it rats symbolize uncleanliness and disease but also secrets and darkness.

They kind of expose the rotting corpse beneath the beautiful masquerade mask so to speak.
Dirty corrupt secrets happening just beneath a thin veil of normalcy.

Fear aura which only has an effect on men? Charm aura too maybe when the wearer wills it? Picturing a fearsome Elizabeth the 1st in conquistador-style armor able to awe enemy men and inspire her male subjects by her mere presence. Of course a curse too which slowly makes violence towards men so comm...

I've used rats of all sizes and wererats to good effect as they can prowl through the sewage systems and even appear out of your toilet if they want. Did a wererat assassin/gangster villain doing that. Needless to say I always made them play out any visits to the bathroom from then on and they neede...

Very good story.

Almost felt the villain got away too easy at the end.
A stint in a Kargat secret prison would've been preferable IMO.
