Re: Population and Size Variants

I tend to run the Core as about half the size of the US. I have played with size over the years many times, however, and even shrank it down once so all of Ravenloft was one city the size of London. The size variants you suggest seem reasonable - I'm assuming you're going to offer advice on how the ...

January "Little Fears" Contest

So, it is January, the month of Janus the two-faced god. To celebrate the new year I'm going to run another contest, the theme being duality. The contest will last 2ish weeks and the winner will receive either one of the currently available Little Fears books, ("Happy Birthday Little Fears"...

Re: Help for lull in story

1) Use phantom shifts, time travel or other supernatural phenomena to create monsters with no repercussions. I can't agree with this; an encounter with no repercussions is worthless. That said, you could possibly do variations on this - the nightmare court for example - where the repercussions are ...

Re: Introducing New Players to RL

I was referencing the old debate we used to get into on the Ravenloft-L mailing list over whether the inhabitants of Ravenloft (or at least those domains that were copied from prime worlds or created whole-cloth) were "real" or not. I never liked this "false people" approach; I'...

Re: Ne group on deviantArt.

Some nice images here; though seriously that whole "Vecna in Sigil" thing always drives me nuts - it makes no sense. (It's hard, being a fan of Vecna, Ravenloft and Planescape I want to like any series of adventures which includes all three, but Vecna really never belonged in either Ravenl...

Re: Introducing New Players to RL

More personal stories; Ravenloft adventures aren't typically about saving the world and even when they are they're told in a series of smaller, more intimate scenarios. Play with monster descriptions to make them more Gothic and frightening ... kobalds look like bent children with twisted faces, Orc...

Re: Little Fears

Speaking of, the 10th anniversary edition of LF, "Happy Birthday Little Fears" just recently hit the streets. I am running a little contest on RPG.net to win a copy of the game, so if you haven't picked it up and you'd like to see the system that started it all, (with some new art and adde...

Re: Elizabeth Bathory as a Dark Lord

In general, though, the Damned aren't limited to only one domain; they aren't as powerful as Dark Lords, but neither do they labor under most of the restrictions. A Damned character has - usually - failed a few Powers Checks, and is destined to suffer for their behavior even as they benefit from it....

Re: Elizabeth Bathory as a Dark Lord

Of course, none of this prevents us from having plenty of RPG inspiration and fun with their reputations, true or not. :D I've never liked these arguments. They smell too much of revisionism and holocaust denial. If spreading such stories were simple political sniping in those days, wouldn't there ...

Re: Elizabeth Bathory as a Dark Lord

Personally, I wouldn't make her a lord, there is too much tendency to make every evil person from film, literature, or history a lord - I would just make her an evil person, no doubt having failed some Powers Checks and both gained and lost because of that, but unless you can really do something uni...

Re: Domains of Dread Versus Realm of Terror

If I may ask... is The Red Box Islands of Terror from 2E, or another? I'm still working on getting my collection together from 2E, and would like to make sure I have all that I can. Thank you. "Islands of Terror" was a book supplement put out for 2nd Edition; the Red Box Set was also seco...

Re: The Created Part II: What would you change

When I ran The Created, I made Giuseppe the dark lord; a child murderer and kidnapper incapable of having his own children. He had a split personality and Maligno served as outlet for his cruel and malicious side; while the puppet maker seemed like a sweet and lonely old man. When the players encoun...

Re: This Sickens Me

Having spoken to people from the area, this seems legitimate. Of course, many of them are outraged by it as well, but that hasn't resulted in them doing much, so far as I can see. Edit: Indian Country Today seems legitimate, if a potentially biased source. They provide links to a page organizing pet...
