Re: The OGL, Ravenloft and You
This is Star Wars, but with a "what if the Galactic Senate never sided with Palpatine?". Rebellion is small right now but real enough, and Anakin, though trained by Darth Sidious, has decided to cut all ties and directly oppose him. Though, he's still Anakin when it comes to his spite and ...

Re: The OGL, Ravenloft and You
System neutral OGL/ORC. Thoughts? Personally, I don't really see the point outside of that "hit 'em when they're down" factor. Campaign promise. Moral victory translation into (hopeful) investment/sales. Fan-thunder steal. Etc. Indie pushback because of royalties? They will (or risk ) esse...

Re: The OGL, Ravenloft and You
Nice mess. I'm impressed. Haha, yeah really! Corporate ineptness and pouncing for the title belt, played out in public, makes for a good chuckle indeed. One corp's crap is another corp's treasure I spose. Whatever. Dunno about any of you but my game is still on schedule. And I doubt there'll be any...

Re: The OGL, Ravenloft and You
Yeah, that part is a bit greasy for my liking. "You can make money with your creation(s), and have to kick us some when it generates X amount of dollars, but if we like it and use it then you'll get nothing from us. Afterall, we own it. Legally." They should at least offer the creator a 20...

Re: The OGL, Ravenloft and You
If Paizo (or anybody else that's currently financially leeching) wants to avoid the 25% kickback to WotC (for twinning their IP), then that's that. But to get on with anything other than that, it's ridiculous. Smart, to try and stir up dust, but some of us can still see If they want to go in the dir...

Re: The OGL, Ravenloft and You
Huh. Quick reads tells me Wizards are casting defensive spells to protect their domain. Years of low percent high profiteering are, potentially, coming to an end. "Thanks for helping with the proliferation of our brand using the tools we supplied you with (wasn't that the whole point?), but if ...

Re: Favorite Non-Darklord NPCs
For me, George Weathermay. Hands-down. One of the few "good guys" in the Black Box (I can't think of any others right now all the same, outside of Van Richten), and his touch up in 3E was as I've said before the most organic in so far as my mind envisions the wear and tear nature of Ravenl...

Re: We need to do something with these people
True. They got the backing (plus at the least limited resources from their defence package co-signs). But does Borca have enough grit for colonisation? Slaves as fuel for their envisioned economic engine of the Core (and possibly beyond)? Political savvy, for sure. They do have several ingredients a...

Re: We need to do something with these people
I'd say that there are times where support cast is more important than the lead antagonists. They are oftentimes the introduction or hint to a particular echo of evil that lies in wait for our heroes, the initial rev of tension, the rock that is found (and flipped), blah blah. Call it what you will....

Re: We need to do something with these people
For me, Ravenloft was always about highlighting evil and presenting said evil to the table as a series of challenges for them to contemplate. Sometimes the fight was futile, sometimes it led to conditional victory. Sometimes the fight was external, sometimes it was internal. Etc etc. Where I got my ...

Re: Ilsabet Obour and Ivana Boritsi: What's the Difference?
Micheal Myers is indeed a character I do not like, even if the first movie is great. However, I'm not saying it can't be used, I say I do not use it. And all I'm really saying is that sometimes a "simple, born evil" monster can be the vehicle for a rather complicated and far-reaching narr...

Re: Ilsabet Obour and Ivana Boritsi: What's the Difference?
Of course. I simply find the idea of born evil disgusting on a personal level and too simplicistic on a narrative one. Born evil characters are just machines programmed to do evil; no depth, no evolution, no interesting backstory no flavours at all. Think about Frankestein by Mary Shelley; the Crea...

Re: Review thread of VRGtRL 5e
Its like a movie reboot, in a way. Yeah, very much looks that way. And like movie reboots it looks like they went right back to the beginning. Just as Curse of Strahd was a reboot of the Ravenloft module, Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft looks to me to be a reboot of the Black Box. Its presentation...

Re: Review thread of VRGtRL 5e
First, as a mod, language. That post slipped a little into PG-13. And I should probably reiterate that we at the FoS do want this community to be accepting and inclusive of everyone. [/color][/b] I do want to keep this discussion mostly focused on Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft . This is not the ...

Re: Review thread of VRGtRL 5e
I describe myself as "woke" sometimes. I try to be progressive (or as progressive as a middle-aged white man can be) and definitely encourage D&D products to include diversity. Because everyone should be able to see themselves in the game world and feel welcome in the hobby. D&D s...
