[MotRD]Masque of the Gray Web

Post by BTsam »

I'm building a concept, a Gothic Earth's variant. Assume that the Earth is still invaded by entity like Red Death, but not in the era of Imhotep -- this occurred in the network information age.The Gray Web is summoned to Earth by "Network negative consciousness", and "Masque" in the cyberspace. The Gray Web will seduce those who abuse technology, as well as in the network to expose their own dark side; Then giving them ability, so that they become "Lords", their YouTube channels and blogs is their "Domains".

Lords spread rumors on the network, demagogic on the network, the network environment has become more and more irritable and blind obedience. This further affects the reality, people are changed by the network -- Toward the negative direction. Worse still, some "rumors" will become the real threats; When an urban legend spreads to a sufficient level, the Gray Web will make it "real".

I'm looking for some suggestions. :D

So it's full of porn?

Serious feedback:

1 This idea is good, but I think it might potentially involve too many real-world social and political controversies for my tastes.

2 On the other hand, I really like the stuff about urban legends becoming real. I could suggest some movies and other media that do something similar, but I want to avoid giving any spoilers.

3 I'd consider bumping things a bit further into the future or making this a sort of alt-tech and alt-history cyberpunk world. Do something to distance a bit from our world, if you share my concern about #1.
Maybe things started going off the rails with ARPANET?
If you don't care about the concern I raised in the first item, then maybe you don't need to go cyberpunk or alt-history with this one.

Thanks for the feedback. :D
I was inspired mainly by a series of Japanese games, called 流行り神 -- This title means is "Spirit created by rumors" . Its theme is also about urban legends, it will give players a case, then follow the choices you made during the survey, you will get a "scientific" explanation, also may have to face a "supernatural" threat. Your worldview will decide you are facing one psychotic killer imitating Slender Man, or facing a "real" Slender Man.
I think it's interesting. Then I thought, these modern urban legend is our generation's Dracula or Frankenstein's monster, is created by our environment and doubts.I think if the environment is more close to the "our time"(Or the near future, like 2025), these urban legends will become more ... uh, "close to the environment", and will be more creepy. :)

The urban legends theme seems to me to be the strongest part. And now or near-future does seem to work best with that concept, as you suggest.
