Marais de Tarascon, Morning of April 11th

Post by Nathan of the FoS »

After the party ties up at the dock, Gerard gets to his feet and struggles to the house, assisted by Crow; in response to the bard's quiet question he mutters, "Non...je suis ici tout seul. Quelle nuit...eh, merci, m'sieur, je suis oblige..."*

Waving the bard away at the door, he mutters something to Roland, who responds apologetically before turning away as the swamp-fisher enters his home and shuts the door behind him.

"I hope you have found what you need," Roland says quietly. "I do not think you should expect a second trip, at least with the old fellow." Shrugging expressively, he leads you to the path leading back to Marais de Tarascon.

*No...I'm here alone. What a night...well, thanks, m'sieur, much obliged..."

As the door closes Hiro turns to look out at the path. As he walks off he flicks a coin at the door where it rolls onto the step infront. Compensating the man for the trip Hiro tips his wide brimmed hat and walks off with the others, a small firefly hovering away from under his hat and into the swamp, strangely in a different direction from others of its species.

Gertrude gratefully stepped on to the dock once more, sparing a rueful glance at her swamp-stained dress. She looked down at the waters, at the vanishing ray of moonlight, and raised her hands to her heart in a silent sign of thanks. She was grateful for their safe return, the light riding of the loa; she had heard stories about the possessions, and had seen a couple of examples that night. Does it vary according to the loa, or perhaps the personality of the ‘mount’? A whole new line of study rose before her, and she was tempted…

Till she recalled the Shadowcloak.

Is this really what you want?

She shook her head at the thought, then turned to follow Crow and Roland to the shack as they escorted Gerard.

At Roland’s response, she gave a small smile. “I could hardly blame him. Thank you again for your own aid tonight.”
His only real danger is if stupidity is contagious and lethal. In which case, we’re all dead…-Gertrude

Dadrag hasn't said a word during the travel, his eyes look carefully around both to water and to Gertrude. Despite her words, he doesn't trust the loa. When they finally arrive and leave Gerard the ex-assassin turns to Draxton and asks:

"So, do you need me more? Do you want me to escort you at your inn?"

Brother Jurgens information should be accurate. He hasn't led me wrong before and now would not the be the proper moment to begin. Looking around the Inn, no other patrons were present. The heat was almost unbearable but she'd suffered worst. Nursing her drink she thought about Souragne and what had brought her here.

Having studied about Souragne in Martira Bay doesn't begin to prepare you for the reality of the place. The heat, the interminable rain, the mosquitoes..... I have heard talk of this Seigneur des morts but believe it more to be an old mother's tale if anything else. The Inn is peaceful at this ungodly hour, but I care not as I have rested most of the day. I wonder what these people are like and what Brother Jurgens wants me to learn of them for our mutual friends? They seem to be investigating on some information they came by. Which is why he is here as well in meetings at the Maison Soulambre.

Parting company with the boatman, the bard makes sure to give Gerard's shoulder a companionable squeeze -- a mute gesture of comradeship, one befitting the Souragnien's blue-collar heritage and his own default 'cover' as a roving entertainer -- to maintain the rapport his actions on the man's behalf have established. There can't be many residents of this small village, with nerve and swamp-smarts enough to visit Chicken Bone's hut on a stormy night! Crow's quest for information may yet require him to question Gerard in private, to learn who else has undertaken such a journey recently, or whether others grow curious about this night's errand.

"Yes, many thanks to you both, for your aid," the spy adds to Kingsley's remaks. "And -- if you would pardon the request -- for your discretion, as well. Powerful forces saw fit to intervene on our behalf, this night, for whatever reason; if tales speak true, such forces usually prefer for their intercessions to remain a private matter."

He waits for Gerard to shut the door and pass out of earshot, then glances askance to Roland.

"Likewise, I myself would rather not raise envy in your community's songwrights, nor see my own bardic gifts mistaken for forbidden practices. I admire your nation's music, sir, and have no wish to alienate its maestros with grandstanding. So, I'd be grateful if rumors of our little 'short-cut' to the riverbank do not spread, to trouble my visit with tiresome challenges of skill." Slim fingers run along the strap of his guitar-case, as Crow winks at the Souragnien: an Our-Little-Secret wink, inviting Roland in on the prank of keeping potential competitors ignorant of his true level of expertise, as player and spell-singer.

And if honor doesn't restrain your tongue, friend, there's always the fact I keep company with men so wealthy as to think naught of paying a common laborer with gold! Not that I expect you to blab about this night ... not when I'm the one who spared you a dunking and goaded Dadrag into medicating you, or when the Serpent King's little visit casts its own veil of secrecy over this entire venture. Still, best to be certain.

[OOC: Just to be on the safe side, Sense Motive on Roland, to make sure he wasn't thinking of telling anyone about tonight's trip or any suspicious magics he might've seen along the way. (Crow's own magic shouldn't be a problem, as bards are tolerated in Souragne, but better to remind the guide about that.)]

New p.c Dorothea Nairne

Post by steveflam »

Dorothea Nairne appears as a human female in her early twenties, with long red hair braided back neatly and green eyes. She stands at 5"8. She wears a charcoal grey tabard upon which is a blue circle,
yellow square and a red human embroidered onto it. Under this are a simple pair of pants and tunic and a well worn pair of travelling boots. Tucked in her belt are Nunchaka's . At her hip is a weapon hilt
in a scabbard. She holds a Quarterstaff.

Turning to Dadrag, Draxton replies wearily. "No, I don't think I would need your services for the moment Dadrag. Thank you for the good work" Draxton watches Getrude as he comments his bodyguard's performance. "We should meet later this afternoon, after I manage to rest my old and cold bones. I'm not a young man after all."

OOC: Draxton is glad Dadrag was paying attention to Getrude once she was possessed.

"Of course not, m'sieur," Roland says, slightly put out by the implied lack of faith in his discretion. "I will be more silent than the dead." As the expression passes his lips he blanches, as if realizing anew the implication of his words--the dead might well be caused to speak by the powers consulted this night. "More silent than the dead," he repeats. "I thank you--all of you, m'sieurs, madame--for your generosity. I hope you will not take it as a personal..."

Pausing, he over the group with confusion, then mutters, "Sacre..." Shaking his head, he continues, "The other gentleman, the outlander; he is still with the old gentleman. Gerard will not return for him, I think. I tell you plainly that I have no desire to return myself, not for love nor gold; but how will he find his way back?"

Dadrag gets the meening of the merchant-mage words, so he nods to him and just says:

"I'm here to protect you Draxton."

Turning to Hiro he says:

"Well, I guess we are free now. I'm going to Le Coq Noir. Are you staying there too?"

Hiro nods "Yes Dadrag-san. I believe I will be called upon when needed so have some spare time. Shall we go?"

Gertrude listened unobtrusively to the exchange between Crow and Roland. She personally had doubts as to how long the whole matter would be a secret. Roland could promise discretion, but his aunt would surely twist the truth out of him at some point; then there was Gerard himself. It was not a lack of faith in their ability to be discrete; rather, it was the pressure of the extraordinary events they’d been involved in. She had heard of possessions before, but Serd’s display certainly did not fit the usual description of that special event.

She gave a small smile at the reference to the unquiet dead, and raised an eyebrow at the beginning of his warning/apology. “The gentleman in question was quite confident in his own abilities,” the Zherisian drily replied. “I am sure that he will find his way back one way or the other.” Hopefully the other, in the belly of a crocodile… “I am sure if my colleague is truly concerned, he will arrange another foray on his own. But please do not concern yourself over the matter any further- and my thanks again for your aid this night. Please give my regards and thanks as well to… the one who referred you,” she continued with only a slight delay and change in her planned reference. “It was most appreciated.” She curtseyed to the young noble.

She straightened up, and ruefully smiled down at her stinking, hem-drenched skirts. “But now it is time to make my own way to the town." She turned at the bodyguard's farewell, and called out. "Good night, gentlemen, and thank you for your aid this evening." They had been annoying at times, but had finally proved their use in the end.

She turned to the rest of her colleagues. "I will be going to the Port. If any of you are going to our destination, feel free to inform them of the results of our little adventure without me." She was becoming aware of the fact that they had not really received much of an answer after all from the voodan- and wondered if the Oracle was waiting for that crucial moment to help them through that particular problem. That still leaves us the Burning Man- another attack on the way?

Or perhaps a fine firework to conclude our tale
, she thought with private amusement.

Draxton turned to Getrude as she informed them "Are you sure you don't want to be there when we tell about our little adventure? It would seem a bit ... odd that you decided to leave. After all it was you that guided us out when the guides were disabled"

The bard, who looks thoughtful, interjects this remark into Draxton's and Gertrude's exchange:

"Beg pardon, but if I remember rightly, our... associate said that returning before dawn could prove inconvenient. Best not to rouse folks from their sleep prematurely, particularly when we're all in need of a rest ourselves."

He tilts his curly head, peering at Draxton's clothing, still sodden from the dunking in the river.

"And at the very least, old fellow, you're quite right that we all need to dry and warm ourselves. It'd be embarassing, indeed, to succumb to hypothermia in a realm as sweltering as this! I recommend we meet with our associate as a group, perhaps over a spot of breakfast."

He nods to the FoS members in turn, Buchvold included.

[OOC: That's just Crow's oblique way of suggesting a time for their rendezvous with Roeccha, i.e. when the Maison's staff lays out breakfast for the attendees.]
