Masque of the Red Death D20

Post by Ail »

Hi Folks,

I'm planning to do a MotRD campaign and I am reading now the D20 campaign setting, selective reading back to back with 2nd Ed. I've seen there's lots of dislike here towards this book, and I am hugely disappointed with chapter 3 at least. But I'd like to know more of the reasons for the dislike.

Are there specific threads about it someone can point me too? I made a search but not found what I wanted, exactly.

Any criticism is valid, I just want to know what others have identified as bad (I never played MotRD before, hoping some guys can teach me about their experience).

I am a HUGE fan of Masque of the Red Death AD&D 2nd edition Boxed set. I did purchase a copy of 3rd Edition hardcover at one point, but overall I still prefer 2nd Edition-although I LOVED the 'sinkhole of Evil' concept from 3E.

Use any rules set (D&D or otherwise) that works for you. Heck, I played in a 'Masque of the Red Death/League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' game once using Chaosium's Superworld! We recieved more Power Points based on our Sins, then had to take the same in Disadvantages to refllect our debasement-it was awesome!

Both Ravenloft and Masque are more about Gothic tropes than numbers...use any system you like and modify to tastel, says I..

Thank you very much for your input :)

Well, I have not read the 2nd supplement completely. Mostly, I read the mechanics on both versions. I've almost finished MotRD D20 and my complaints are almost all in chapter 3: I love the flavour of the classes, but I think some of them are wrongly executed.

I am worried that playing an Adept might be quite frustrating, so I'd like to know about other people's experiences on how to improve this. For example, has anyone tried to remove some of the penalties in powers checks for evil spells?

I'm ok with the rest, it's just the game balance that worries me.

I have found a Player's Guide by Jonathan Winters (in this forum, Patrick Pflouffe IRL, if I got the spelling right) and I mostly like them, though I would still look for some changes to avoid the alchemical part of the intellectual classes.

Still, advice of previous players would be nice :)

since we do have a forum dedicated to MotRD, I'm moving this there.

Main reason, why I don't like 3rd edition i's MotRD is, I don't like 3E at all. Despite rules' awkwardness, I still prefer 2E (and really like D&D 4E, but that is different story). To me 3 Edition was too much rules heavy.

Moreover, we got only one book where in times of 2E we were presented with excellent Gothic Earth Gazetteer. It was impossible to fit monsters, classes, rules and Forbidden Lore in one book, so all topic were covered rather slightly, than in depth. But still, I consult 3E handbook to get inspiration, broaden knowledge and just to read it :)

Hi Ail,

Just noticed this again.

It's Plouffe. :)

BTW, my friends and i were just discussing last night a new MotRD campaign.

Here are the details, most likely set in London, England.
And we will tweak (again) the rules. Some kind of PFRPG upgrade I guess.

I will post my updates here in the coming weeks (or its own thread).

And the spellcaster checks are part of the MotRD mythos I guess.
If you don,t like it, just get rid of it! :)
No harm, no foul.

Ok, gotta run. Back later!
