Alien RPG

Post by Drinnik Shoehorn »

Has anyone else read the Free League's Alien RPG?

It's an amazing game, one of the best Film/TV IP adaptations I've read. It doesn't rely on the trope that some adaptations do where they take one line from the series/film and build a mechanic around it (Buffy TVS RPG and the Firefly game are particularly egregious with this), so there's no rules like "Game Over, man!" or "They mostly come at night."

It's set just after Alien 3 and takes Alien: Isolation as canon.

It has two game modes; Cinematic, where it's very easy to die and very much in the style of the films where there are character motivations which pit player vs player.

Campaign mode is interesting as missions are made up from die rolls on tables and the GM (Game MU/TH/UR) builds the story out of that.

I recommend it.

I absolutely *adore* the panic dice mechanic. It's something I'm going to try and steal for my next in-person Ravenloft game.

I'm normally pretty jaded about licensed games, especially something like Alien, which was a story that had been told. But the game won me over.
