Help Needed Identifying a Book

Several years ago--the mid-2000s maybe--I remember reading (or having read to me) a book. I don't remember what it was about or what it was called. I just remember one character clearly:

The Custodian

As I recall, the main character--perhaps a young man; it was probably young adult fiction--was traveling with a group of other people, and they had to cross through an underground area. To help them navigate, they dealt with the Custodian. It appeared to be a human man, but it had mechanical, spider-like legs which folded into a slot in its back. It escorted them in its own unnerving way for a good chunk of their journey, then some dynamic shifted. It snatched up the main character, but retaliation from the others made it let him go and scurry off down a sheer cliff, never to be seen again.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? It has been driving me nuts for years.

Crisis averted.

It was The Fall of the Templar, book three of the main Grey Griffins series by Derek Benz and J. S. Lewis. Apparently, one of the chapters is called "The Custodian."

I really ought to reread those. It has been far too long.
