That is pretty good. He can make a good show of gnawing this stuff without any ill effect.
And some of the roots may provide nourishment.

He needs food more suitable for his body, though, and pretty soon.

Would berries be suitable food or is he going to need something more solid, like meat?

Berries are a nice start.
But yeah, some fish, venison, some root vegetables, mushrooms ( non toxic) that would be good.
