He leans forward. "Which begs the question of what happened to Richard," he continues, "And how you think we're going to accomplish this wedding when we don't know where the groom is."

"I'm much less worried about Richard's safety and whereabouts now than I was a moment ago. The very thing the gnome tried to warn me about must have happened. Everything you have told me about the assassins and their actions leads to only one logical conclusion: someone in the Savelle family, almost certainly Richard's father, intercepted my message and took action to stop the marriage from being contracted. My other agents who were to escort Richard from Savelle House have either succumbed to a bribe or else..."
He shakes his head.
"Richard has doubtless been detained on his family's estate, whether by some ruse or by force I can't guess. Certainly they won't harm him; he's not just a kinsmen but Master Savelle's heir. What we need to do is protect Elissa from the assassins. I want to help Richard and Elissa get married, even now. But you are right--it won't be easy. I'll have to think further about the plan, with her wishes and your advice taken into account. If we cannot somehow get the lovers together, at least we can return Elissa to her family where she will be safe."

Alfonse nods. "In a way, I think that would be best," he says, "I'm concerned for the girl's safety, of course, though I don't understand what Richard's father's play is in all of this. Would there be some sort of benefit to House Savelle to come from her death? I'd think it would just lead to even more strife between their families."

He shakes his head. "In any case, know that she is safe for now. If you think it best, I'll engage a coach and have her delivered to her home safe and sound. In the meantime, maybe it would be best for you to get hold of your agents and this priest and find out what the hell happened." He sighs. "I've discovered I'm not fond of near-death experiences."
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

"Yes, I will try to find out what happened with the other agents and the holy man. But I'm not waiting on that information to protect Elissa. And a coach? At this hour? It isn't even dawn. Not nearly enough security. No, I think I'll send some men with you. I'd come myself, but if I can keep my name out of this debacle , I will. You never mentioned my involvement to Elissa or anyone else, did you?"

"You are right I have thought the same thing. This was a clear set up, but maybe it wasn't Aldron, we have been talking about taking Elissa and the marriage many times at the inn and as walking perhaps so it was easy for someone eavesdropping and tip Hoblin's men. I'm more worries though because they knew the exact plan, where we will meet an that there should be a priest. These men were assassins, have you seen the dark blades? They wanted to stay hidden, surprise us, take Elissa and kill us. They wanted Elissa alive that's for sure so they were paid to get her. I'm pretty sure that we will encounter them again, that's why we need to find the others, find a place to hide and more important decide what to do with Elissa. We cannot just let her go out like this. At house Hoblin she will be protected by her family but this means no marriage and no pay for us. Maybe it is better if we can get Richard and ask Titus to marry them, we don't really need another priest to do this. Have you remembered to get me Fild's or Titus garment? This will help Gem locate them."

"Sure. Listen, I'm pretty stressed out about the whole evening's events. I really need to unwind so tomorrow I am going to go do what I always

do to unwind. Fish. We won't get paid for our troubles this evening, so I think it's okay. I gather you fellas can take care of Miss Elissa without me.

I'm really tired. I'm going to take a nap and head out later. We can meet at the Frisky Friar at supper time."

She hugs her brother and curls up in a corner, using her pack as a pillow. Soon she is snoring.

THE VINEYARD HOUSE

GERTIE sleeps while her brother THOM and his dog, Gem, keep watch through the small hours.

Elissa sleeps, too, in the little bedroom nearby.
...

STREETS

FILD, DAMIEN, and VARRUS have fled the park ahead of man-hunters. Now they move through the dark streets, from place to place, seeking a way to contact their missing companions and their employer, Aldron Folbre.

...

FOLBRE HOUSE

ALFONSE continues his interview with the young Master Folbre. The aristocrat paces the floor, waiting for his questions to be answered to his satisfaction.
