TOM is on the verge of nodding off when Gem's growling draws his attention to the window near where GERTIE sleeps.
The dog whines, standing over Tom's sister with its ears flattened and its snout thrust toward the shuttered window.
Gertie wakes suddenly "It's time to go fishing,,,,, what? Say Gem what's wrong?"

She looks in whatever direction Gem is facing. If the window is closed, she opens it to get a better look.

The dog stares at the window shutters( they are all in the front room, the one with the fireplace.)

THE VIEW THROUGH THE WINDOW

When GERTIE looks out, she spots two men with drawn swords advancing rapidly on foot toward the front door, coming right through the vineyard grounds. And something further out in the dark, big. A horse?
As the men get closer, she sees black stuff smeared on the blades, and catches the dull glint of metal studs on their jerkins.

MEANWHILE

ALFONSE

...

Otho wobbles on the horse's rump behind Alfonse, keeping his knife at the mage's neck.
"Scoot forward, dammit."

Aldron hums a pleasant tune as he turns his horse's head back west, toward his estate.

The assassins are entering the vineyard.

Tom has heard Gem as well.

"Gertie get Elissa we will take the tunnel. We have been betrayed again and I doubt that was Alfonse..."

They go...

To the Admiral's Arms.

But when they arrive, the pub seems closed for the night, and no one answers their knocks at the door.

Damien hears something, and grabs FILD to warn him. The human points down the street to the north.
A mounted patrol with a lit lantern, at least five riders.
Damien squats next to the gnome and whispers,
"We'd better scoot!"

Elissa rises, rubbing her eyes.
"What's wrong?"

Gem howls.

Wood cracks-- doors and shutters flying inward in the front room on different sides of the cabin, not quite simultaneously.
Men with black blades rush into the little house from multiple directions.
Elissa screams.

The siblings and the lady flee into the round stone room in the SW corner, killers at their backs.
Gem bounds through and Tom slams the door.

It is dark in here, but Tom can see to find the cellar stairs.

Tom leads Gertie and Elissa in the cellar.

"Take my hand and follow me! Don't light laterns will make it esier for them to follow. Gertie use the marbles so they have hard time to follow us. I have as well if needed."

The assassins are entering the vineyard.

OTHO shifts his left hand down from Alfonse's collar and shoves the prisoner hard in the small of the back, pushing Alfonse forward in the saddle till the horn presses at Alfonse's crotch.
Very uncomfortable!
But the violent motion throws off the guard's balance-- he slips and wobbles on the rear of the horse. His knife comes away from the mage's neck...

When Alfonse feels the knife press away from his neck, he digs his heels into the horse's side and yanks back as hard as he can on the reigns, closing his eyes and hoping for the best.
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

The horse bucks hard!
Alfonse keeps his seat.

Otho curses, sliding off the rear of the saddle to tumble over the mare's rump and onto the dirt.
