POVERO Chapter Eight

Post by ewancummins »

EARLY MORNING

WATCH HOUSE

ALFONSE
GERTIE
TOM

The watchmen took the small party ( and the wounded prisoner, whom Alfonse failed to revive) to a meeting room in their guild's strongly-built headquarters, where it must wait under guard until someone from Holbin House arrives. The watchmen did not shackle the adventurers, or subject them to indignities, but they did require them to lay aside their arms and armor after they go within the building.

Elissa Holbin left the group then, led away by watchmen in mail shirts. If anyone asked, he would have learned that she was going to Holbin House under heavy guard.
Under no circumstances was anyone from the group allowed to leave with her or give her anything.
Gem was able to lick her hands; that was about it for goodbyes. The watchers left the group no opportunity to talk further with the young lady.

...

NOW, half an hour later, an apprentice watchman enters the big oak-paneled meeting room. He sets a heaping tray of hard rolls, sausage, fruit, and cheese down on the round table in the middle of the chamber.
Then he goes about opening shutters in the ceiling to reveal sunlit skylights. The angle of the sun leaves parts of the room wrapped in shadows, so the boy moves rather than extinguishes the candles on the table and in alcoves.
Another lad comes in with two big red clay jugs and sets those down beside the food.

The four door cudgel-equipped guards (two for each visible door of this room) take turns grabbing food off the tray and filling their wineskins from the pitchers.
One then indicates the remainder, enough food to make a small breakfast for the three held for questioning, and then some.
"Eat up."

FILD

AT THE FRISKY FRIAR

alhoon wrote:Fild has tried to remain awake. But after a warm meal and some milk to chase the anxiety away, he found himself nodding forward on his seat at the table. His sword on, his arquebus tied to his back, Fild sits at a corner, near a window. People come and go as he positions his body in the two walls of the corner for comfort and warmth. It's not very comfortable with an Arquebus lodged between his back and the corner, but he doesn't want to get very comfortable.

He watches people arrive and leave. His memory goes back home, in the Tazeloff gatherings. He should have listened to Jild, his sister and pinched the big cat that was sitting on sleeping aunt Iorda. Sure he would have got in trouble, but it would now have been a good memory...

A hand shakes him. Fild realizes he has dozed off and a watchman is upon him! They caught him! He lets a loud yelp and his hand goes to his sword as he's prepared to run... until he realizes a moment later he's not being arrested. He quickly apologizes to the guard.
"Sorry! You startled me. That's it. I have dozed off and you startled me. I wasn't scared because you're a guard, I haven't done anything bad. And we gnomes sleep late and wake late. That's why I was dozing off, nothing out of the ordinary... You were saying my good man?"

Fild is quickly informed that he's being summoned and that his friends are already giving a report over incidents of the last night. On that, Fild looks around. The guard is alone and the Frisky Friar doesn't seem to be surrounded. If his friends have betrayed that he was complicit in kidnapping nobility, he would have got a much stronger "escort".

So, he follows the guard.
When he gets outside, three watchmen come out of hiding places alongside the building and surround the gnome. They shoulder their hooked glaives and march in formation around him, so that no one else can get to him, and so that any way he runs, he will be vulnerable to snatching or striking with the pole weapons.

As he is led away, the gnome sees Damien standing on the sunny stoop of the inn. The gambler winks at him, and then goes inside.
He does not come back out before the watch hustles FILD down the road...

INSIDE THE FRISKY FRIAR

TITUS

DAMIEN seeks out Titus.
"Hey, signore priest, you just missed something. Watchman took our gnome. Not sure if he's under arrest. They didn't take his stick-cannon off his back. But the match isn't lit , anyway, and they marched him off like this was something serious."

He shrugs.
"I don't know what to do. So I'll follow your lead."

While waiting the half hour, Alfonse pulls his spellbook from his pack and flips to a blank page, pulling it loose and scribbling quickly...
VIEW CONTENT:
Folbre set us up. The assassins were his men. He took me prisoner and made me bring him to you.
He passes it to the others waiting there with him.

When the food comes, he smiles politely and eats it hungrily.
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

Gertie takes very little food. Enough to sate her appetite. She will , however, put some food wrapped in clothing, in her backpack. Anything she can eat again later or tomorrow.

She's very quiet. Looking at the piece of paper, she frowns. Looking at Alfonse she whsipers, even as she hides the paper in her suit Sorry Mister Alfonse but I don't know how to read."

She turns her attention back to her food, sighing.

He darts over to her.
"Hey girl, where is it?"
He pulls on her collar, loosening the lacing over her breasts.
" Don't fool around with me! I saw him writing on paper."

The other three Watchers lay hands on their slung cudgels as they step closer to the middle of the room, but not too far from the two doors they guard (set in opposite walls).

Gem, leashed to a chair nearby, snarls when the man accosts GERTIE.

Outside the Frisky Friar

Fild doesn't like the developing situation at all. He looks for an opening to bolt, but he can't see any.
"Thank you for the 'escort' friends. You know what? since, as far as I know I am not arrested but summoned, I would like to postpone for a bit the meeting. I realize you're all busy men but it'll just take a minute. I just want to tell our gracious landlady that I'll probably not be here for lunch. Should I tell her that I'll be here for dinner? "

Tom stands up and goes by his sister ready to protect her if the guard hits her. Trying to sound calm and not threatening he says:

"No need for violence, you got your paper please let my sister loose. We have assisted the Watch right before coming here and cooperated with the Watch leader when told us to come here. We will wait for as long as is needed for someone of Hoblin's family to come over."

The guard releases Gertie's collar.
He takes the paper from her, stares at it, and scratches his head.
And then he turns and heads for one of the (closed, guarded) doors...

Tom hungs his sister he knows that this situation might be overwhelming for a 16 years old girl.

"Gertie, listen to me, I know that we have been into too much drama the last days. When we came to Povero I hoped that was for the best, that we can start a new life and live prosper. Alas, none of us could anticipate all this, to run into Aldron, to get involved in Houses matters and even be here right now. But I promise you this, I will try my best to take you to safety when this is all over, you are not alone Alfonse is a smart man and he will find a way to explain the situation to Hoblin's and Savelle's if necessary and set us free. Lady Elissa will be safe with her family and the Watch with the help of Holblin's men and me if they want will try to get these assassins. Sounds ironic but we are safe here, we are protected by the Watch. We just need to clear everything with Hoblin's that will not be that easy but is manageable. Afterall we saved their daughter, she is a good woman she will vouch for us. So please take couple deep breaths and calm down. Eat some fruit if you want and you will feel much better."

TITUS AND DAMIEN

"I do. We'd better hurry."

DAMIEN leads TITUS out of the inn and a short way down the Bay Road.

He points through the light traffic at a small party moving across the road, four men and a child-sized figure among them, moving away from the inn and towards a block of masonry buildings a little deeper into the city. The men carry polearms some sort, whose steel heads glint through the haze of road dust.

Together, the two men trail the watchers and the gnome, maintaining some distance but trying to keep the group in sight.

Gertie looks at her brother and smiles "Thanks Thom" and hugs him back. She takes some more food and goes to sit with Gem, giving him some meat and rubbing him and scratching him.
