POVERO Chapter Ten

Post by ewancummins »

(If you are happy with minor assumptions I made in the last scene, then your PC is on scene for the building fire and stragglers encounter. Feel free to quote the final post of Chapter Nine and use it as your intro here. If you want a SEPERATE scene because your PC would have gone off on his own or done something diff entry, I am happy to arrange that. If not, post away.)
ewancummins wrote:(If the others go with Alfonse) The party moves north, away from the waterfront, looking for pirate stragglers in the streets.

Gem catches a scent, sniffing at the air and whining. The dog noses toward a particular section of buildings north beyond a row of warehouses.

Tom and the others see smoke pouring from the doors and windows of a two story stucco shop and loft, set a little distance apart from the nearest buildings on either side. The sign above the doorway shows three golden balls, but they have to squint to make it out through the rising cloud of soot and fumes. They can't make out the lettering.

When the breeze shifts and blows the smog toward them, they catch a whiff of hot oil along with the odor of burning wood and plaster.

Shutters on an upper window facing the south side of the street fly open. A figure appears in the smoky rectangle-- a woman with a sagging cloth draped over her head and shoulders. She thrusts a squirming thing out over the window ledge.

"Oh no!" Damien points at the kicking, screaming toddler.

The woman sways. She does not scream, but when she opens her mouth, a ragged cough comes out that almost sounds like words.

At that moment, a side door swings open into the alley on the right. Four men with clubs and daggers emerge from the building, coughing. One man's club is a guttering torch. They are all dressed as sailors, and carry sacks on their back, out of which loot spills into the street as they hurry off...

"Get the pirates! I'll save the kid!" Fild shouts as he goes to rescue the toddler. He rushes under the burning building and shouts to get the woman's attention "Here! I'm stronger than I look! " He calls out through the smoke extending his arms to catch the baby.

The woman drops the child.

Screaming, the kid plummets--
Right into Fild's arms.

Tom,still helping, sees that the little boy seems to be unburned. The kid is crying more than coughing.

GERTIE rushes past the rescuers and cracks her whip at one of the looters slinking off down the side alley.
The man yowls in pain as the rawhide licks across his shoulder blades and slashes through his thin tunic. He drops the sack he was carrying; brass pots and mugs roll out across the pavement stones.

DAMIEN also dashes across the street, stopping near Fild and Tom. He starts climbing the front of the building.
''Hold on, lady, I'm coming to help you!"

The others?

Alfonse steps discreetly behind the group, sending his sling whizzing and launching a bolt towards the pirates.
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

Titus moves to engage the pirates.

Sixt moves around GERTIE and cuts down one of the pirates.

Alfonse's bullet strikes an enemy in the leg. The man screams, limping away.

Titus battles a pirate toe to toe. The villains hurls his bag of loot at the cleric's head. Titus ducks, swinging his mace at the thrower, but spins off balance when it passes through empty air where his target had stood a moment before. The freebooter skips back, brandishing his long dirk.
" Keep away or I cut ya!"

Damien has reached the edge of the upper window.

One pirate down.
Two hurt.
One unhurt and now skeedaddling away, dropping his sack.

The party slays, takes prisoner, or drives away every pirate-looter in sight.

The heroes rescue not only the small child, but his mother as well.

LATER

THE BRIEFING

Back at Watch HQ, the party learns that:

the party's attack on the pirate cog succeeded. The pirate's were too busy fighting the fire, and then trying to fit a new sail, to escape the warship. All surrendered , were taken prisoner, or were slain by the marines.

The city fleet is chasing and fighting the other pirate vessels involved in the attack.

Order has been restored and fires put out in the waterfront-warehouse district.

Aldron Folbre has offered a truce. He will deliver Richard Savelle, alive and unharmed, in return for complete amnesty for himself and his followers.
Negotiations over this are dragging out...

In light of the offer, the Savelle family wishes to delay the party's raid. The Holbins want to launch a full force strike against Folbre House.

A builder who knows Folbre House somewhat has been recruited to guide the party on any raid or rescue mission.

Alfonse drums his fingers idly on the surface of whatever tabletop is being used for discussion. "I think," he says, "That the Savelles will be happy to get back their son, regardless of when it happens. And...I think that Aldron deserves a bit of payback from us."

He leans forward. "Let's go get him."
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

Fild doesn't seem very happy that Aldron may escape. Yet, he tells Alfonse: "I would say that we better wait before hitting Aldron. Let him deliver Richard sound and safe and then we blatantly violate the truce, probably with the blessing of the other two families. Break our word, ignore the deal, flip on our position. His kind of thing. Aldron will understand. "

Damien chuckles.

"'Yeah! It's not like we would be granting him amnesty. This is personal. But I think the signore is right about not waiting. I mean, if we dawdle, Master Folbre has that much more time to plan something nasty. Right now he's maybe shaken up by how his hand played out."

Tom listens carefully at the others and says:

"Aldron wants the amnesty , I believe he will keep his end of the bargain. He has time to make another devious plan later. He isn't a fool also, he will expect a payback from us, Savelle or Hoblins later. That's why we need to do it now. If he is negotiating he will not expect an attack. We need to make sure Hoblins will be on our side and help us if we get caught. The attack for what I understand will not be authorized by the Watch, we will be by ourselves once again. So we need allies if something happens."

GERTIE shifts her chair a little closer to Tom's seat.

" I agree. Allies. I think we should talk to the Snitch. Yeah, I know, he's tricky. But he owes me."

A newcomer enters the room, escorted by a single watchman. This stranger wears a protective cap, reinforced shirt, and carrying a serviceable-looking dagger and short sword.
He eyes the party and the watchmen with undisguised wariness.

"I brought the map."

He coughs into his fist and looks to the seated party members.

"The Builders Guild will want this business about the map kept quiet. Plans going missing and all...Understand?"

He lays a roll of paper down on the round meeting room table and flattens it for the others to examine.

"Not the whole estate. This is just Folbre House, proper. There are other buildings, cabins, sheds, barn, workshops. Other parts of the estate inside the big outer curtain fence: woodlot, vines, garden, irrigation ditches, pasture, rock quarry, all that stuff. But this is the heart of things. We have no cellar maps. Didn't build those. They were already there, some old dungeon the Folbres built over. I'm told."
