"I didn't get a good look at the actor who delivered the original message, but now I wonder if this 'Maeve' knew about the invasion, or has anything to do with it....Filbert, we should investigate the Norge and see if we can't find us this witch.

Sherrif, I need you to raise a levy, do it among the heartier of the men and the refugees from Ghonallison; impress upon them that the goblins could turn this way and we have to be ready."

"As you command, my duke!"

The Sheriff, unless detained, makes his goodbyes and hastens to carry out Devlin's orders. Norton goes with him.

Devlin has no trouble acquiring fresh ponies, supplies such as lanterns and rope and whatever other mundane things he thinks he needs to explore the Norge...

CROAKER NORGE

... Mist rising from the depths of the great scar in the land conceals its true depth, but Devlin and Filbert can see that the sodden walls run down further than a pike-man could thrust his weapon if he were standing at the drop-off. Unseen streams bubble and splash under the ground fog, what must be hundreds of frogs croak out calls and responses, clouds of sluggish gnats rise from the dewy heather to buzz softly around the Duke and his Fool.

The guide, a skinny youth named Root, lifts his torch and points out a slippery-looking stone stairway that descends into the limpid gorge from a narrow gap not far from the party.

“People say She built it, Your Grace. But my gran’ther says that’s nonsense. Witches can fly. He says the Old Lords built the stairs a long, long time ago... when folks used to go down and bathe in the Norge. That must have been before She came…”

"Enough o' this!" Cormac shouts, loosing his handaxe and vaulting in through the window to join into the fray.
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

THE ROAD NORTH

Watchman Sevet looks up at the castle and licks his lips. "Hey boss, what say we stay the night there? Wouldn't mind getting a little meat and ale, maybe a bed."

Rennault gives Sevet a curious look. "So eager to stop? I thought you'd be champing at the bit to get out of the city, and into those hills near Croaker."

Sevet shrugs. "Wouldn't mind getting a chance to do a little climbing, boss. Just not all that eager to find out what that Duke needs his arse wiped about."

"What His Grace needs his arse wiped about," Renn corrects.

"Alright boss, alright. Well whatever His Grace needs his arse wiped about, I'd be a damned sight more eager to do it with a belly full of mead. Especially if he's gotten into some kind of fight we'll need to rescue him from."

"For the time being, Watchman, it's our duty to follow His Grace into whatever he desires. Though I suspect the most trouble he's gotten into has been at the top of some brothel house. In that he's much like you, Sevet. You might get to like him if you met him. Just mind you don't catch whatever he's surely spreading to the whores. Not the way you want to be blessed by His Grace, I'd wager."

"Heh." It's the first sound Watchman Gatt has made in a few hours, and Renn can't tell if he laugh is meant to be sarcastic. Par for course with Gatt, Renn figures.

"Might as well stay there," Gatt says. "If they've got castle walls, they'll be drinking. And if they're drinking, they'll have secrets to spill."

"Right you are indeed," Renn says. "That's why I take you along, Gatt."

"Heh."

With that, Renn turns his mount toward the castle, to see what hospitality Montros might be able to give him. Besides, Renn has his own reasons to call on Montros. At the last council of war, it seemed that only Montros truly understood the kind of cunning it would take to bring Alamie to heel. Montros might be a good friend to have, Renn reckons. Or at least, a good enemy to avoid having.

Roald glances at Torthur and nods in the direction of the small man creeping his way towards Mon Meg. He then starts to make his own way towards Mon Meg.

Croaker Norge-

Devlin nods to the youth taking in the tale.

"Lead on Root. We are right behind you. Point out any footsteps too steep for Filbert here."

Devlin draws his rapier and main gauche, and watches out for signs of danger.

Root blinks
“What? Me? Down there? But I…”
The skinny youth stops speaking and bows his head. He turns and walks to the top of the stairs. With each step, he mutters prayers to Haleyn and Cuiraecen, and to Nesirie the Sad Mother, to save him from the evil that waits below…
…

On the way down, the guide, Filbert, and Devlin must proceed with careful steps lest they slip or fall from the stairs, for the slime slicks all the stonework. Thick mists choke out the morning sun, creating a an untimely twilight. Root’s lantern cuts through the vapors just enough to reveal missing steps or loose slabs of masonry. The light or heat of the glass-paneled lantern draws clouds of biting gnats. Now and again, other lights flicker and dance in the fog, ghostly balls of pale blue. Down below, the frogs continue to croak.
Root’s mumbled prayers choke in his throat as a fetid breeze rolls across the lower deeps and reveals to all three explorers the bottom of the Norge, just a few steps below the party’s current position on the staircase.
Murky waters fill most of the lower depths of the gorge, turgid streams and dark pools. No green plants grow here, but all manner of fungi sprout from decaying heaps of peat and dead, sodden brush; from tiny red mushrooms to great leprous toadstools as big as Filbert. Some of the fungoid things creep and quiver like slow, slimy animals. No frogs can be seen, but the croaking that Devlin and his companions heard at the top of the Norge now grows louder and louder, before suddenly dropping off to a low drone.

Root, half-paralyzed with terror, manages to squeak out a question,
“C-c-can I go up to check on the ponies, Your Grace?”

RIVERSIDE WRESTLING MATCH-

EVERYTHING HAPPENS VERY FAST!

Torthur signals Clyde as best he can while tossing around a brawny human boat-man, his opponent for this match.
Urged by the dwarf's frantic gestures and loud growls, Clyde rumbles into the crowd, headed more or less for the greasy little guy that’s moving towards Meg. People jump out of the bear's way.
Somebody bumps Meg’s backside and she turns to look.
Fast as a ferret, the greasy man (who Roald suspects may be Fez) leaps on Meg and presses a naked dagger against her neck.
Torthur, shoving aside the confused boatman, leaps from the makeshift ring and lands between Meg and Roald.

The greasy little man snarls," Stop or the fat lady dies!"

Clyde doesn't seem to understand or care about the threat; he charges...

GRIFFIN CASTLE, SEAT OF HOUSE HAESRIEN

Rennault’s band is admitted after only a brief delay at the gatehouse. The grim look of the outer walls gives way to a colorful scene; silken banners in the rose and gold colors of Haesrien hanging from white-washed inner walls, pretty ladies and maids strolling through meticulously kept gardens to rival the grounds at the Ducal Palace in the city, livery-men exercising strong chestnut horses in the yards, and at the center of all a keep covered in climbing ivy. Montros’ men escort Renn and his companions to a reception chamber in the keep, rather smaller than Devlin’s audience room at Caer Haes but almost as opulent.

The aged Count Montros soon makes an appearance, shuffing into the parlor leaning on a gold-capped stick, an entry with no special fanfare. The old man smiles at Renn and lifts his withered hands in greeting.
“House Haesiren welcomes you, scion of Ghonallison. Please, make yourself comfortable. ”

Count Montros then takes a seat in a high backed chair, resting his cane over his knees.
Two serving-men presently roll in a large cask of fortified wine, stamped with the starburst sigil of the vinter. Three others set goblets and chairs in place at the large oak table.

Renn’s men waste no time sampling the count’s hospitality, unless restrained.

GOBLIN FIGHTING IN THE STABLES

Most of the smaller monsters fall on Foerde while the big one lashes at the priest with its long whip. Foerde is nicked, driven back, strikes down to drop a goblin.

The mule brays and shrieks as if in pain or just very scared. Neither man can see what happening in that stall just now…
Adam wrote:"Enough o' this!" Cormac shouts, loosing his handaxe and vaulting in through the window to join into the fray.

Cormac tumbles in, swings at a goblin and misses. A goblin drops on him from the hayloft, but the druid shakes the vile little brigand off without getting cut or bitten.

The mule, crazy with pain and fear as a little goblin tears at its back, charges towards Foerde, but the battle-priest steps away in time to avoid being bowled over.

A wee goblin rolls between Foerde's legs and stabs him in the groin with an oversized poignard!

The big master-goblin cackles, cracking its bull whip at Foerde."You gonna be our slave, beast-man! We make you gelding if you don't give up now!"

After the robe wearing goblin jumps back and kicks door close, Foerde hastily searches the area for anything to block that entrance that might slow down any goblins coming that way. He notices some loose floor boards that could be a hatch, he makes note of it and moves back towards Cormac's position by the window.

"Still got them two Gobs in hayloft and there some loose floorboards that could be a hatch." He says. "Don't know how many more are going to come through that door but just in case be ready to jump out that window, so we can lure them out into the open."

After he finishes speaking Foerde begins to chant in Andu..

After he finishes speaking Foerde begins to chant in Andu..

Cormac is able to hold the goblin reinforcements back at the window by swatting and hacking at the extended spears with his axe, standing so that the wall gives him partial cover from any attempts to stab him.
The goblins outside fall back a few steps in the face of Cormac's stout resistance, but now and then jab their spears at the open window to prevent the men from using that exit.

The loud thumping that the two men had heard earlier renews, grows louder. It seems to be coming from under those loose floorboards.

When Foerde goes to attack through the window, he finds the goblins, at least ten of them of them (mostly small, but a few big ones in the mix) formed up in a semicircular spear hedge, just out of sword's reach. If he leans out or climbs through the window, he's liable to be stabbed multiple times.

A noise above him, inside the building, draws his attention. Sounds like rain drops hitting the floor of the hayloft.
Something huge, black fur and red jaws leaps at Foerde, springing down from the loft!

Foerde battles the warg while Cormac tries desperately to hold back the emboldened goblins at the window. The beast bites Foerde but quickly falls under his ferocious sword blows.

Cormac barely has no time to catch his breath or confer with Foerde, but must concentrate all his efforts to hold back the swarming goblins at the window.

And now the outer stables door, set behind the left side stalls, shakes as goblins or something worse beats at it, shaking the wood panels and rattling the bar.
The inner door, where Foerde had piled whatever heavy junk was handy-- an old barrel, a broken pack saddle, splinters and crashes open. Three small goblins rush through, swinging clubs.

Cormac is forced to fall back for a moment, and a little goblin vaults through the window. It darts at him, jumping sideways to avoid his axe and driving him back with quick spear thrusts. More goblins crawl into the window, pushing and shoving each other in their haste to enter the room.

Foerde stands in the middle of the stables, sword raised and chanting aloud, staring through the window..

The goblins have the two men completely surrounded, cut off from all escape routes in sight, when a great bolt of lightning flashes down just outside the window, coming down right on top of the goblins pushing into the room.

The goblin fighting Cormac drops dead as lightning arcs from outside to strike the creature’s raised spear and iron helmet.

The three goblins at the inner door take just a quick look at the carnage in the stables at turns to flee as the sound of thunder rocks the walls.
The frightened mule bursts after the three fleeing goblins, kicking at them and driving them further down the inner hallway, out of sight.

A quick peek through the smoking window shows a heap of dead goblins piled against the blackened wall under the window sill, crackling with sparks.
