D&D Movie III: the Book of Vile Darkness

Syfy is airing the third D&D movie tonight, "The Book of Vile Darkness".

We all know how bad the first movie was. The second movie "Wrath of the Dragon God" wasn't too bad. From what I have seen of this third one, "BoVD" will be a lot like the first movie.

huh... the 2nd was actually not terrible, I agree. I guess I'll give this one a go, but ready the tomatoes...

The second movie was fantastic if only for three reasons:
1) we finally prove that a straight up cleric of a nature god is usless
2) Someone finally checks for traps
3) The bird (you know what I mean)

All I can say about the D&D movies is that I've seen much, much worse.

That's a seriously bad movie.

I wanted to watch the first one, but a large cadre of my friends talked me out of it, telling me it's not worth watching even as a mock-the-film movie. My sister was suprised by the 2nd movie, which I found mediocre as she said "Wow... this thing is actually watchable!"

It could be worse. It's arguably the best of the three.

I actually like the second one much better than the first. Though I do kinda like the humor a bit of the first. Again don't think we'll ever get a shabang movie but it's nice that a few people have tried. If anyone liked these movies check out The Gamerz: Dorkness rising as well, and Journey quest on Youtube. Give it a few minutes and it will start to grow on you

This has been sitting on my Tivo since it aired, and I finally got a chance to watch it, or should I say, sit through it.

Yeah, it was bad. Not as bad as the first, but pretty bad. It definitely got the D&D feel at times, I'll give it that. And it named-dropped a ton of stuff (mostly 4e, so it didn't resonate much with me), so it did feel connected to d&d lore. But sometimes that went a bit overboard. I cringed when the shopkeeper asked if he wanted "heroic or paragon" armor. Really? Really?

The opening scene almost seemed ripped right out of the Shadowborn novel, but I gather a lot of the story regarding the BoVD came from the 3e BoVD, which I have, but haven't read all of. That's a nice touch. But really, the major disappointment came from the summary on the Tivo:

"...and must rescue his father from a creature known as a mind flayer." I was waiting the whole time for a mind flayer, and then it ended (very abuptly, I might add) and there was no mind flayer. I only found out by looking online that Shathrax was supposed to be a mind flayer. Really?!?!?! You have the opportunity to put one of your iconic creatures on the screen and you turn him into a goth with his mouth sewn shut? what a missed opportunity.
