Termelan seems scandalized by the notion. "Lord Filbert, that is the problem. The mere idea that I ever saw a True Mage as a companion, without me being one, would lead to a bad fate for me. You see sir, the very fabric of our society is based on exactly that: That the True Mages are superior beings. A non-mage and lowborn at that, having spent drinking time with a True Mage presents a threat to that way of thinking.
But have no fear sir, I can get away with killing the Crone. There's legitimate proof she got her power from fiendish pacts and such a thing is the only thing that would unite the True Mages and they would take action. And it's not like word of what I did here will reach my city.
When it comes to that, I won't fail to strike."

After Filbert accepted his services, Termelan smiled, dropped to one knee, got Filbert's diminutive hand on his own and kissed it. "You do me honor my Lord. You won't regret your decision."

"Maybe we did. I see water moving in a channel, I think. Need more light to be sure."

And , indeed, if everyone falls silent a moment, the searchers do hear a soft gurgling noise from the pit.

Cormac, holding his torch aloft, starts scouting down into the mine shaft.
With the druid in the lead, the party explores the down-sloping stairway passage.

Down they go, under the mountain…

…The searchers spend the time it takes for Cormac’s torch to burn down combing through a maze of partly collapsed passages, stairways, and dead end galleries. They find the bones of small animals, rotted wooden splinters, and some tool marks on the stone walls and floors.
But then Cormac lights his second torch in one of the deepest areas of this maze, and the light reveals something no one noticed before, not even the Bard with her superior night vision. In the back floor section of a dead end passage, a bit of dull bronze gleams through a layer of debris and dust.
Searching and clearing that part of the floor, they find another bronze hatch. With effort, the strong men pry it loose. A foul stench rises from the pit below the hatchway. Cormac’s torch flares blue for a second, but then returns to the normal red glow.
Nevil remarks, “That’s ripe! Smells like a well full of pig dung.”
"I was starting to wonder if anything was even alive down here," he says, "Keep an eye open, lads, but no telling if this is waste from slaves or some other monster that lives down here."

Renn, his men, Reese, and Sir Boarhort all clap hands to weapons and look about. Not alarmed, perhaps, but alert and ready for trouble.

"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

Cranstel nods. "Indeed, blood samples, the needle, all of this will be helpful to my analysis. Let's, ah, let's have it delivered to my laboratory however. Perhaps enough dangerous things have been brought to the Duke's residence for one day." He smiles.

The Searchers

Cormac shrugs. "Well, it ain't gonna explore itself," he says, getting ready to jump in and look around.
"You really think they brought children down this way?" The Bard says.
History prefers legends to men. It prefers nobility to brutality, soaring speeches to quiet deeds. History remembers the battle and forgets the blood. What ever history remembers of me if it remembers me at all, it shall only be the fraction of the truth.

THE FOUL PIT

Nevil clambers down the short drop, moving in after Cormac.

The two men look about.

They see the narrow passage sloping down towards the general direction of the cliff face and cave mouths, and sloping up as it travels further under the mountain. Slime drips from the stone walls and ceiling. Gray water flow down a channel cut in the floor, sluggish and carrying debris.
A closer look with the torch shows fragments of bone in the mucky water,,and Cormac also finds a scrap of faded green cloth.

Past the torchlight, deep darkness at either end.

Searchers

Roald climbs down after Cormac and Nevil.

He glances at the foul water, noting the direction of the current.

He points upstream. "I suggest we go that way. Find out where this water is coming from."

The Searchers:

The party hikes up the tunnel.

The stench grows as the explorers move further from the cavern hatchway.

Nevil pinches his nose and opens his mouth, but after a few paces, he drops his hand from his nose.
''Tastes worse than it smells." The scout spits and continues on, mouth clamped shut, breathing through his nose.

On the party goes...

Cormac's torch flare has begun to gutter, pouring out smoke and a little blue light when a sudden draught blowing from some point in the darkness ahead of the party. The torch revives and the smoke clears with the increased flow of air.

A few steps forward and Cormac's torch shines on an open corridor at the upslope end of the tunnel. Beyond the arch lies a large stone chamber.

Nevil creeps ahead to check it out. Seeing no immediate danger, he motions the others closer.

Looking through the open corridor, they can all see that the floor of the large, hexagonal vault appears flooded with foul muck and pools of turgid water. This water and waste is the source of the thin stream that flows over the lower lip of the corridor and down the hallway channel (which current the party followed upstream to get here).

The chamber looks big enough to corral a dozen horses or encamp a small company of men.
Shadows hang in the far corners like in giant spiders; motionless when looked at straight on, but creeping up and down in the onlookers' peripheral vision.
Dirty water trickles into the room through three large pipes set in the walls at man-eight set in walls of the far half of the is sided chamber.
Strings of white stuff hang from rough spots along the walls, near and far.

Holding a torch into the room, Cormac sees that the pools comprise much more muck and offal than water, but several small puddles of almost clear--though still tainted-- water stand in shallow depressions scattered around the sunken pediment.

Something stirs in the central pool. A curled leaflike thing, ochre colored, slides up from the water on a thick, ropey structure. The false leaf uncurls, revealing a cluster of bright eyes.
A bulky form thrusts up from below the fleshy eye-stalk, spraying foul water almost to the corridor.

Nevil curses and jumps back into the drainage tunnel, almost knocking over Cormac in his haste to retreat.

A wide mouth filled with yellow dagger teeth opens in the lumpy body of the muck monster. Long tentacles, one one either side of the rotund body, uncurl and wave in the air. The raspy pads at the ends of these thick appendages open and close as if grabbing at something.
Rumbling, belching sounds come out of the maw.
Then words, in the Dwarf tongue,
VIEW CONTENT:
"You give me food."
(Still partly submerged in slime, the thing's exact size is hard to guess. But it must be larger than the biggest man in the party. Maybe as big as a pony?)

THE MEETING AT CAER HAES

A page enters the room, goes straight to the Castellan, and leans over to whisper a message.

Sir Rory dismisses the boy, and then turns back to the others.

"Sir Gunnar should be here soon."
He collects the signed documents, stacking them to his right.
"I leave it up to his lordship" --here he looks at Filbert --" as to whether the meeting should adjourn here or you should all wait for Sir Gunnar. It is your task now, gentlemen. Ladies. But if there is some way I can assist you, let me know."

Filbert nods.

"I think we should wait for Sir Gunnar, maybe he has important info to share with us."

Turning to Cranstel he adds:

"I will ask a servant to fetch the chest to your laboratory soon after the meeting so you will have plenty of time to examine it."

Safana leans across to Cranstel and mutters quietly.

"Would that skin rejuvenator get rid of the scar that poisoned dagger left? If so, sign me up for a treatment..."
