Procedural Hex Crawl in Ravenloft

Post by Lost Heretic »

My players recently finished adventuring through AD&D 2nd Edition's House of Strahd. They had a great time and want to explore the setting more... but with Fifth Edition instead.

Now, I've also been working on rules for a procedural hex crawl for D&D 5th Edition - essentially the adventurers begin on one hex (ostensibly a town) and explore the hexes around it, randomly generating the terrain and features of the world as you explore new lands. There's an immense sandbox feel, but it still supports story gaming - you know you need to find help in the port city across the mountains, but who knows what you'll find on the way?

So, do you think I can pull off such a procedural hex crawl in Ravenloft? If so, where would I put it? I've already defined the Core domains for the players, so it needs to be somewhere else. The Amber Wastes seem big and ripe for exploration, but that's a big divergence in setting from I6. The Shadow Rift is ripe for exploration and could provide some weird, alien horror as opposed to the gothic.

Any other recommendations? Is there a thematically appropriate Island of Terror that I may have missed?

I'm not sure I fully understand. Does such a crawl need to take place in a land that is unknown to the DM as well as the players? Does it not work in an urban setting?

As I see it, the idea of starting at a base of operations and working your way outward would work anywhere, from Paridon to Saragoss, Bleutspur to Staunton Bluffs. If you could explain more why it would work in one of these than another, maybe I could see what I'm missing here.

If it's vast trackless reaches you need, I suppose The Shadowlands would work best.

The Orphan Queen must take the throne

If the idea is that new land is out there undiscovered, and only becomes fleshed out when the players go there, how about a new domain forming as the Misty Border pulls back? put it at the edge of Darkon or Sithicus, or maybe the very tip of Nova Vassa to minimize the already explored area nearby.

The Shadowlands and a new, unexplored domain are both great ideas.

I was also playing around with an idea of exploring the Burning Peaks cluster after Vecna has vanished. It seems like that place would be suitably dangerous and chaotic... although gothic horror would certainly be lacking.

In theory the cluster dissolved after Vecna escaped, at least since Kas is now a vestige (per Dragon magazine using the 3e Tome of Magic vestiges). Who knows about the darklord of the mini domain from the RPGA Second Chance adventure.
