Very true! If the poster takes the time to give details about what they're talking about, then the readers shouldn't have any problems figuring out what the abbreviations are supposed to mean. Honestly, I didn't view the RV being that confusing for everyone. I think that most people just didn't expect to see Ravenloft abbreviated in such a way.

That sounds... original! I'm looking forward to read the details!

3.5 is definately for me

I started in 2e...but I never really liked it much. I mean it worked, and until 3e it looked alright. I had so many house rules...thats kind of the fun of it I guess, fixing all the bugs yourself so that you have a game that works well.

3.5 has a few things that are just better...

no more exponential stats...that was silly, the new stat system not only is less dangerous to work with but makes stats not the most important thing, but fun to play with.

Everything is a modified ability check. I love that one...no more silly tables and everything else...thac0, or the rest of the crazyness. I admit that I still lower my AC when I don a new piece of armour...silly me.

But my favourite:

Monsters with levels and ability scores. no more abstract monster things or what not...everything is presented to be able to easily be modified to whatever you like.

3e has a much better feeling of consistency to it.

3.5e...well the monk and bard were fixed and I like DR better now.

My big peeve is the sorcerer though. I think the idea is great but with only 1 extra spell per level and a horrible spell progression the sorcerer just sucks. I like the idea that they don't have to 'lock in' their spells for the day. I think I'll expand that and give them magic points, they draw their power naturally anyway.

Anyone who quotes Pinky and the Brain is all right in my book... Be it second edition, third edition, or other! 8)

If you like sorcerers, try psions. They are more powerfull and much more sophisticated. Psionic is a way of life! Plus, they are more balanced (but somewhat much more powerfull than the sorcerer) in 3.5 than in any previous edition (in 2.0 there were only broken ultra-powerful psions. in 3.0 there were 2 options: useless with style, or broken with less style)

You mean people actually used the monsters as they were presented in the MM? :O I always changed them

I never used the maximum spells per day as "spells per day" instead I used it as the maximum a spell caster could use before having to rest so she/he could use or memorise more. Of course, in the original 2E, it took a long time to memorise spells, so I shrank that to 5 minutes per spell level. Still a long time but alot shorter than the original standard was (what was it again? oh yeah, 10 minutes per spell level). I don't mind sorcerers though, especially wit hthe house rules I just ported over to the new edition without alteration ;)

If you don't like something though, just make a house rule to alter it. Give the sorcerer another spell to cast maybe?

Maybe we should make another poll:

What RV or RL means for everyone?

I like 3rd edition, is more simple and less real than the 3.5. But I know that many people prefers 3.5 for this reason, as my brother!
- The first 2 Feats a wizard should take are "point blank shot" and "Precise shot"!
- W H A T ! ? !
- Or they should NEVER memorize rays!

Not so, true believer! In both of the Ravenloft campaigns I've run in 3.0 and 3.5, the sorcerer has been the MVP of the campaign. :)

Alot of my friends also commented on the idea that the sorcerer sucked because there was only 1 extra spell per level. But understand that power boost works exponentially. At 1st level, you only get 1 more spell - no big deal. At 3rd level, you have 2 more spells than the typical specialist wizard. At 5th level, 3 more spell slots. At 11th level, you have 6 more spells that you can cast.

But the true power of the sorcerer lies in the ability to choose their spells on the fly. In the first campaign I ran, everything the sorcerer had, he could give to everyone else. If the sorcerer had spider climb...well now the whole party had spider climb. Back in 3.0, if the sorcerer could cast haste on himself, well now the whole party could have it, too.

In my second Ravenloft campaign, when the sorcerer got Dimension Door, he became like Nightcrawler from the X-Men. He was always bamfing in and out of sticky situations, making him the perfect spy and getaway man.

In short, try out the sorcerer before you turn the class down. It's definately become my favorite class of the new edition.

2nd Edition, only because I'm more familiar with it. The only 3rd Edition product I own so far is the Ravenloft Core Rulebook.

I use to be diehard 2nd ed. When 3rd ed came out I was like I don't like 3rd edition , 3rd editon I do not like, Matt I am! I do not like it at house, I do not like it with a computer mouse! I do not like 3rd edition, Matt I am!

After I finish my home campaign that year, i picked up the books, just to please people that I will look into it, but all i could do then is cry foul and this leads to the path of powergamming!

Then Rookhuasen, 3rd edition, offical Ravenloft chat opened and i join and made 3rd ed. chr. I did play one other game before this but hand off my PC to a friend then rather stay for the game. But i gave Rookhuasen a try, and in two months became a DM on it. Then i did not mind 3rd edition, it is easy system to write stats for, and find it intresting to convert monsters to. Only thing i dislike was xp system with the critters but being a chat they max xp by level a day for the PCs.
I no longer with rookhuasen but still work with the system for 3rd ed for Ravenloft.

Transfers between editions were showed in games

1st edition to 2nd edition -Time of Troubles-forgotten Realms
2nd edition to 3rd edition Die Vecna Die -God enter sigil

Now try to figure earlier editions or the 3.5? I just don't have sufficent information to speculate. Plus it gives someone with some free time to do.

WELL

The first game I ran in ages was 3.5...but I'm seriously looking into converting to the Unisystem when I get Dungeons & Zombies (maybe this weekend).

I run 3.5e as I have found the rules to have been nicely cleaned up from 3e, plus the clarifications on skills, inclusion of reasonable skill enhancing feats and the fixes they made to the Rogue and Druid classes work for me. I personally dislike 2nd edition rules... don't get me wrong, I love alot of the setting material that was put out for Ravenloft with 2e, but comparing the core systems for the game... I just find 2e can't compare to 3e, and 3.5e I find to be a significant improvement over 3e. As for the Ravenloft setting, I run 3e instead of 3.5e since I find the drawbacks to the classes to be too much, and the magic rating system, while interesting, just complicates my life as a DM.

As for Sorcerers, I like them, but as a player & a DM I generally find that any player party should have either a Sorcerer or a Wizard, but not both (and never a multiclassed Sorcerer/Wizard). I consider it to be setting the tone of arcane magic in the campaign by restricting the PC's to one or the other. And as for multiclassing, my troupe concensually agrees that letting players multiclass *into* the Sorcerer class without a good story reason should not be allowed. Ever. Granted, a player could write into his/her background that their character has <insert mystic creature here> blood from an ancestor, but they should have some sort of story event that happens to their character in-game that unlocks these new found powers.
