Let me understand.
Your claim is that the common representation in media so different from reality that it's no longer relevant and thus no longer offensive.
My claim is that the common representation in media being so different from reality - yet close enough to sound the same to folks with no knowledge on the subject - is spreading misinformation.
Well, I am old enough to remember this stuff happening at the time. I surmise you have no frame of reference, and you are producing a victim group out of nothing.
Being around at the same time when something was a hot topic doesn't automatically mean you understand it. I assure you I did my research.
I actually double checked after reading your comment. DID is different from the common conception of 'personality split', but the core symptom is still having two or more distinct states of personality. Yes, there was a wave of fraudulent cases related to the satanic panic, but it doesn't mean *every* case is fraudulent.
This complaint about demonization isn't something I started with, it's a pretty common criticism.

Multiple personalities do not exist, period. Having disassociative states like going from complete calm to hypervigilance is not a manifestation of a different, separate personality. Dissociative Identity Disorder diagnosis has nothing to do with Jekyll and Hyde, or Tristen and Malken. It nothing to do with claims of multiple personality phenomena.
By trying to present these depictions as something to be offended by, you are doing a disservice to people with a mental illness that really need positive framing in their lives, not memes of persecution.
Its troubling that you that you feel the need to police this issue. I think that's the biggest problem here.
Did you know the original Jekyll and Hyde, thare was no Hyde, he was a persona, a alas to which Henry Jekyll to act out without suffering damage to his reputation.
