Poem of the Week: "Les Hiboux" by C. Baudelaire

Post by Le Noir Faineant »

Hello again. Another poem of this great writer this week. I absolutely like his works and I hope I find a good anthology - maybe featuring versions in different languages.

Sadly, this will be the last Poem of the Week for some time. First, I am going for holidays, second, and more important, the Staunton Bluff PBP demands more attention than I thought. I'll continue to post gothic literature whenever I find it, but certainly not in weeky rythms.

:wink: Of course, I'll continue to torment you with my daily postings here at the Frat.

Yours,

Rafael

Le tumulte et le mouvement;

Owls

Under the dark yews which shade them,
The owls are perched in rows,
Like so many strange gods,
Darting their red eyes. They meditate.

Without budging they will remain
Till that melancholy hour
When, pushing back the slanting sun,
Darkness will take up its abode.

Their attitude teaches the wise
That in this world one must fear
Movement and commotion;

Man, enraptured by a passing shadow,
Forever bears the punishment
Of having tried to change his place.
