Ok, so honest opinions of our chat game yesterday, guys. I'll give mine after you all do.

Plus, Raf, do you think we could do the game PbP a bit while we wait for us to chat it up again?

Next game-

WE KILL LEO.
I'll hold your coat...
Well, you missed a whole lot of my typos, I'm sure.
I don't think anyone is in a position to criticise you for that!

I had fun. I thought it was much easier to handle than the chat games I've played, because if people were talking over each other you could read the back log. Only comments are that people need to give more time, otherwise it becomes a typing speed contest rather than an planning thing. That applies both ways: the GM's countdowns were too quick, and the players need to give the GM more time for descriptions before they run on with actions.

I'd just like to agree with pretty much everything Kintire has written in the post above this one.

Hey guys!

It was a great game last night! :)
I overslept two hours, but YEAH, it was great.

Indeed, the countdowns were too fast, but given the context of the scenario, that was totally intentional.

Apart from that, yes, we need to get some more order into it. It was fairly difficult to keep you on track most of the time, but then again, we all were rusty, so don't take that wrong.

Now, on a PBP side-game to this, I got to say no.
The game ended pretty much on a cliffhanger, and I think I left it pretty clear that I would like to DM the likely showdown with Leo that follows.

Within the whole roster of "The Rising", there are no real spots for free-play.
Anybody else wants to take up the cape for another game in our shared continuity (and with different characters), please go on! :)

But on another note... Tarlyn, you wrote an article about Leo? Where? What? Who? LINK PLEASE NAO. :lucas:

I have considered it, actually, although my knowledge of Ravenloft is feeble compared to any potential players, which is a worry!

If you decide to do so, I will help you out. :)

Best introduction: Pick one domain alone, and work based on all the material you have on that. There is usually so much stuff in there, you can fill dozens of campaigns.

I, for example, really just know Barovia, and all the other rest just comes along as I run the operation...

Well, there are several ways around this.

1. Screw canon. You own the setting. Don't be afraid to defy player expectations. We shouldn't be using all that playyer knowledge, anyway. :azalin: Both Raf and I have altered or ignored significant chunks of 'canon.' Rule zero applies to everything- setting as well as mechanics.

2. Create a custom domain, and set the action there. The advantage here is that we will have no knowledge of the domain or its (quite possibly well-hidden) darklord, save what you give us. This is more work for you than some of the other options, though.

3. Pick one domain you know fairly well and set the action there. This is pretty easy. If you run a game set on an island, like Sourange or Zherisia, our travel choices may be somwhat constrained , at least at first. This is actually a good thing. I mention those two domains because the FoS hosts free fanwritten web expansions for both. Between those and some official materials, I'm sure you'd have plenty of material.

All you really need is the Black Box or maybe the 3e campaign book. If you are running 3E, the monster book is useful, but not vital.

What matters most, IMO, is effectively exploiting villains, gothic tropes, and techniques of terror. It's not about fidelity to someone else's campaign notes (which is all 'canon is', in the end), but creating the right atmosphere and dramatic tension.

I third what Kintire said. I had great fun as I always do with Raf's game!

It helps me base the story on a movie or book. Of course not put it exactly as it is there, but keep the idea and the feeling.

Also I agree that you better start the campaign in a domain you know best because it's very important trasmit the right atmosphere to the players even if they know what to expect. For example you cannot play Barovia without the xenophobic atmosphere, or Richmulot without mysteries or Borca without backstubbing etc. These are things the players are looking for and might actually help you running the camplaign.

The gazetteers may help you a lot as well as will do the articles in QotR.

If you are not very familiar with any particular domain and you don't want to read the gaz then as Ewan said, create your own domain. So you can have it as you want. Or you can follow Raf's line and create a real havoc! Have PC meet darklords, save gods, escape from portals in other planes, have really strange dreams, hallucinations etc  I don't say copy Raf, but you got my point. The high phantasy campaingns are fun to play as well and there you REALLY have no idea what to expect! You may for example enter in a monastery and see Leo! :P

But the most important for thing for me is create an atmosphaire and work on the details. This will help to drag the PC and the players in the game, make them live it.

Sure.

If you want a suggestion, I'd love to play a game set in Zherisia.

My internet was fucked for two days so I missed some of this.

I liked when we landed on land. I found the water we wasted way too much time. I as a person am aware of Jamethon and Shana's conflict, Brethana isn't. You guys might find her a bit impatient. But her daughter has been kidnapped by a lycanthrope that killed her husband, a friend of Inovidil's actually.

ewan, I liked you sidekick/follower. Is that due to a feat?

As for a game, I would love to play one with kintire dming. I never did finish my game but my ideas are still there. It is just that it takes place in the future and those of you who played or read my article have an idea what it is about ;)
