"I never heard of Caer Haes. It's a garden, I never thought to ask what the name means. My masters are ... around. They don't tell me of their plans or their whereabouts. " Ugo said still looking at Filbert suspiciously.
"Leave. Thee have no place here. Go back to Grace Deke and Caer Haes. Thee don't belong here knave."

Garden

Filbert sighs.

"Ok we will be out of here as soon as possible. Farewell then."

The halfling returns to his companions and sees the slightly familiar toad like creature.

"I have news Your Grace, I...what is that?"

Cormac frowns and looks around. "Seems fine ta' me. Looks like whatever happened here, it was a long time ago."
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

"Five hundred years, if my memory serves right," Roald says, recalling the histories his mother made him read as a child. "Ganelon and Cedric Pechallin fought here after their father was killed by elves. Their armies fought themeves to exhaustion and the elder brother, Ganelon, got a peasant's arrow through the eye."

Roald points to the hills.

"Then elves stormed over those hills and fell on the exhausted men while Cedric wept over the body of his brother. Legend has it he killed himself right there rather than let the elves take him. Rather sad, really."
"Most men would rather deny a hard truth than face it."

"Aye," the Rjurik man says, "Very grim, but unlikely to be of any current danger, I would think."

He gestures. "Should we be goin', then?"
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

"There's a lesson in that battle, more than a few. Know I wouldn't let the knifeys take me. I'm with Cormac, let's get moving, maybe we can pick up their trail through here."

"Many battles have taken place here over the ages. Some great, some not so great but still battles nonetheless..." Is Foerde's only comment about the conversation at hand. He watches the sky and looks around the ancient battlefield now turned to burial grounds for the fallen.

"We should leave this place in haste." He says. "The Eve of the Dead will soon be upon us; It is possible that in this place, the restless spirits of the fallen warriors can pass from the Shadow World into ours."
History prefers legends to men. It prefers nobility to brutality, soaring speeches to quiet deeds. History remembers the battle and forgets the blood. What ever history remembers of me if it remembers me at all, it shall only be the fraction of the truth.

THE SEARCHERS, WESTERN BORDERLANDS OF TUORNEN, EVENING

Leaving the withered field and the barrow-mounds behind them, the travelers continue south, riding over heathlands and through patches of scrub forest.

The pines and furze of the scrub region thin out as the party moves south.
In late evening, Foerde, riding point, spots the hills of Elevesnemiere rising in the southeast, blue and hazy with mists.

Something whines in the brush up ahead, along the game trail that serves the travelers as a road south.
The noise rises again, thin and weak. It sounds a little like a dog—or perhaps a wolf.
Delight is to him- a far, far upward, and inward delight- who against the proud gods and commodores of this earth, ever stands forth his own inexorable self.

Safana looks thoughtfully around the silent garden, wiping the dark water from her skin. She seems a little tense, but not unduly surprised. As the cleric emerges she glances at him with slight amusement.

"Yes, we are in the land of the fae, the shadow realm as some call it. Although frankly I suspect the bottom of Croaker Norge was more than half..."

She breaks off and watches in astonishment as the giant baby emerges, stepping quickly behind the Duke as he confronts it.

"Well, that's not something you see every day... how has it come through behind us? Does this well lead to more than one place?"

Cormac sidles his horse towards the noise, looking down curiously at the source.

Renn follows Cormac to investigate the sound, keeping an arrow nocked in his bow just in case. "An animal caught in the trap?"

Something flashes through the air and Cormac horses rears up, snorting.

Blood trickles down the animal's neck.

More flashes of dull glinting missiles and all the horses begin stamping, neighing, bucking.

Barking and screeching rises from the dead brush all around, and small shapes like children in rusty scale armor appear and disappear in the cover.
Delight is to him- a far, far upward, and inward delight- who against the proud gods and commodores of this earth, ever stands forth his own inexorable self.

The creature casts about, slack-jawed.
