PENCHALLIN

Just before he overruns his prey, Roald leans from his saddle and swings his blade in a downward arc. A shock travels up his arm as the well-made steel bite into living flesh.

The small humanoid drops in its tracks, darker red running down the rusty scales covering its head.

Roald sees Foerde charging past on horseback, pulling ahead on the left.

THE SKIRMISH NEAR THE TRAIL, PECHALLIN

Rennault fires an arrow into the back of the nearest little ambusher and then spurs his horse after Forde and Roald.

PENCHALLIN

Roald spurs his horse after Foerde, bloodied blade held ready at his side. "Watch for mines or caves. I think these things came from underground."

PECHALLIN, FIGHT OFF THE TRAIL

CORMAC

Cormac swings his axe, knocking one of the fleeing creatures to the ground.

The scaly little humanoid staggers to its feet, reeling, with blood tricking down its neck.
Barks and yips erupt from its snouted mouth.
It waggles its empty hands.

CORMAC, FOERDE, ROALD, RENN

Your charge drives the small attackers before you like rabbits before hounds, all but an injured one who stands empty-handed before Cormac's horse.

You hear commotion to your rear; Sevet and Gatt shouting, horses neighing, missiles thrumming.
Delight is to him- a far, far upward, and inward delight- who against the proud gods and commodores of this earth, ever stands forth his own inexorable self.

ROALD sees Sevet lolling in the saddle.
Near Sevet, Gatt has dismounted and fires arrows over his horse, into the brush.

One of the party's mules jumps and kicks further down the trail, fighting as little rusty devils drag it into the brush by its pack straps.
The mule jerks its hind legs back and knocks one of the ambushers into a thorn bush.

PENCHALLIN

Roald kicks his horse in a gallop toward the mule and the devils attempting to steal it, his sword arm poised across his chest, ready to strike.

Roald's mount carries him close to the mule, before the little robbers have made a getaway. He strikes down at one of the mule-thieves, slicing through little red fingers and a taut pack strap. The leather snaps, the mule leaps, and the injured knocker rolls on the ground , screaming.

PENCHALLIN

Roald trots his horse next to the injured knocker and dismounts. He plants a heavy boot on the creature's chest, and holds the tip of his blade to its throat.

"Time to test your language skills," he says.

Recognizing the diversion for what it was, Cormac reigns his horse in and dismounts, drawing his bow on the way down. He casts a rageful glare at the injured one he had previously struck and whistles a signal to Ned and Hob to circle up with him.
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

PECHALLIN

Foerde follows Roald back to Renn's men. Seeing Sevet lolling in his saddle he rides over to him, letting Roald chase down the mule alone.

Chanting a prayer, he places his free hand on Sevet's shoulder and direct's Cuiraeccen's healing power into Sevet.
History prefers legends to men. It prefers nobility to brutality, soaring speeches to quiet deeds. History remembers the battle and forgets the blood. What ever history remembers of me if it remembers me at all, it shall only be the fraction of the truth.

The bloods ceases to flow from Sevet's scalp as Foerde intones the last syllables of the prayer.
The man groans, pulls himself upright in the saddle, and looks about.
''Unhh, where are they?"
