Filbert goes outside, into the cold street. He spots a couple of men in armor headed towards the watch headquarters. And over near the corner of the building, a woman swaddled in a heavy cloak. He looks a

"Aye, lets get goin'," he says a quick prayer of thanks to Aerik and the dead dwarven family and prepares to depart.

Renn takes the dagger.
No sooner than he wraps his fingers round the hilt, the blade begins to shed green light again. The glimmer grows brighter and brighter.

Roald turns his head down the tunnel the party used to get into this vault. His right hand falls to his sword hilt, almost without thought.

Several of the others tense, sensing something is wrong.

Things move into the torchlight, coming fast on either side of the rail track in the tunnel.
Ghost elves, bloody pink phantoms with empty black eyes and thin, boneless arms flailing like kites in a high breeze!
Under the phantoms, black manlike forms.

And then the

A savage combat erupts.
Total chaos in the vault, neither side fighting in any sort of order, just stabbing, hacking, and bashing.

Renn cuts the snout off one of the creatures with a backhand blow of his broadsword.

The Bard falls back against the stone wall of the vault, stabbing again and again with her sword as the swine things try to pull her to the ground. One of the monsters rips out a fistful of her long hair.

Cormac shoots a hasty few shots, then snatches out his axe and wades in, determined to fight to the death.

Roald and Boarhort press hard into the enemy, laying about on either side with sword and hammer.

Orogs scream and die, but they just won't stop coming.

Rumbling echoes over the grunts and squeals. " Clear the way!" Reese cries out.
The warriors have just enough warning to jump sideways and avoid the oncoming mine cart shoved by their followers. The cart smashes into the last orog standing and carries him five paces down the track before flipping over pinning him to the tunnel floor. The monster grabs the side of the cart and shoves up with inhuman strength, freeing its trapped foot.
But before it can stagger upright, Renn and Cormac rush upon it and hack it to death.

For a moment, the party stands victorious in the light of dropped torches. The only sound audible in the vault and the tunnel is the collective gasping for air.
And then they all hear it...

Scurrying coming down the tracks in the gloom. Like an army of giant rats.

The mine-devils appear at the edge of the torchlight, moving in a mass at least ten deep and three wide. The scaly dog men whisper in Elvish, all at once,
"Elves are coming! Elves are coming!"

The party has only partly explored this level of the mines, but it knows of three possible routes of escape:

It could follow the rails back to the elevator chamber and try to climb the shaft into whatever lies above. This route might carry it into pursuing elves if the party were not stealthy and lucky.

It could stay here and try to clear rubble in the hopes that what looks like the corner of a doorway in the back of this vault is an exit to another part of the underground complex. That might take some time.

It could flee down a side tunnel that has no rails. That passage, which opens not far away from the current location of the party, seems to be the deepest and furthest part of the mine yet discovered by them.

Or perhaps someone in the group has other ideas.

Searchers, Mines.

Roald holds his sword limp in his hand, aching from a hundred bruises and scrapes. He wants to take a long bath and go to sleep in his townhouse back in Haes. But he wasn't in Haes, and this was no time to rest.

He points his sword to the tunnel leading back the way they came. "Elves."

His sword turns towards to the tunnel leading further into the depths. "Orogs and Gods' know what else."

Finally, he faces the the blocked entrance. "Rocks. I say we take our chances with the rocks."

He glances at the mine-devils, and asks in Elvish, "Can you dig this out?"
"Most men would rather deny a hard truth than face it."

Cormac nods. "Sounds like the best bet to me. If the little bastards can get it clear, that's the way to go."

He looks down at the dead Orogs and their newly-hewn elf-flesh cloaks and nods to himself. He reaches down and rips one loose, fitting the grim trophy over his own body, then uses his half-spear to prop another one up in the tunnel leading deeper into the mine.

"I'm going to go try an' buy you some time," he says, hefting his bow and retrieving his two arrows. "If I ain't back when the tunnel clears, move on an' get outta here."

He turns grimly to the tunnel where the elves are coming and goes to look for an ambush point.
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

SEARCHERS

"Rocks it is then, gentlemen." Renn sheathes his newfound dagger and rolls up his sleeves, then gets to work clearing the rubble, trying not to let any of the mine-devils touch him.

Searchers.

Roald nods to Cormac. "If it's all the same, I hope you're back in time to see what we find on the other side of this rubble. It would be a shame for you to miss the surprise."

He sheathes his blade and turns to his squire. "Reese, keep an eye out while we work on getting this tunnel clear. Sir Borhort, we'll need your help. Our lives literally depend on clearing out this passage as fast as possible."

THE MINE

The party works at clearing the passage.
The mine devils scramble to drag away small debris and swing their picks at cracks in the heap of fallen stone. Roald steps on the foot of one of the little dog-devils. It barks and leaps back, tripping over Nevil as he heaves a large stone aside.
The air, already foul, fills with choking clouds of dust.
The men work hard and fast, sweating in their armor, eyes tearing up from the dust and smoke.
A small opening appears. The rotted remains of a wooden hatchway. Boarhort punches the wooden frame and a flood of debris spills from it: small stones, dirt, bits of bone, dead brush. The heap buries six mine devils alive; the creatures dig out, spitting and yapping.

Air , cold and damp but fresh, seeps into the vault.

Beyond the smashed wooden hatch opens not a hallway or another room, but a long and slanted shaft leading upward at a steep angle. Light glimmers at the far end. The masonry inside looks rough enough to climb, and the shaft appears just wide to admit even the largest member of the party if the men go single file crawling up the shaft. Roots poke through in places along the uppermost parts of the shaft, but nothing that would block passage. Indeed, the plants might provide handholds for climbers.

Gatt says, ''Looks like a vent."

Reese hisses a warning.

Down the way the Cormac went, rocks tumble, arrows hiss, someone screams.

Reese steps to the corner of the tracked tunnel, lifts his crossbow and steps just far enough into the passage to shoot. His crossbow twangs and a split second later another scream echoes down the passage.
The boy steps back behind cover, turning to face the others.

''Cormac's down, but I think I got one of them."

LATER, EVENING

Crowley returns and makes his initial report. He has learned nothing useful about kidnapping operations in Alamie or Tuornen, but he has picked up a rumor that river pirate activity has dropped off of late. Few sightings, fewer attacks on the water. Less trouble in the towns and villages down the river, on either bank.
But there hasn't been any big campaign against the pirates. No mass hangings or anything like that.
The dungeons in Lofton and Haes do not hold more than a few pirates, unless Crowley has been misinformed.

Nothing in Domenica's business reports suggests that Crowley's report of diminished pirate activity is wrong.
No known, obvious reason for it to drop off, besides the cold weather. And the river is not frozen over, just some ice in the slow flowing eddies and pools along the banks.

The guard who says this uses a friendly tone.
"I'll have this on mind. Do you actually know a place within walls that has decent drinks at decent prices?" Termelan said.
After receiving a reply Termelan gets back to the inn to avoid staying out in the freezing cold. To that purpose, about halfway he stops by any cozy tavern, eats some warm soup and hurries back to the inn to get near a warm fire. He keeps the exquisite brandy he was given to share with madam Safana if he sees her.

"Very well. You've done well this day, all of you," she tells Vollmar, Crowley and Gimp whom are gathered in her office. She hands an envelope to Vollmar. "Give this to someone to deliver to the watch. Make sure they are unknown to anyone. You know what I mean.." She gives specific instructions about the delivery.

Domenica brings Crowley up to date on the days events and what they've learned. Crowley tells his boss about Torthur and his request.

"Vollmar, stay here and keep the fort. I am going to go visit your cousin along with Crowley and Gimp." Rising from her seat, she exits the room with Crowley and Gimp.
They head for Atli's shop.

AT ATLI'S PAWNSHOP AND COUNTING HOUSE

Domenica sees six hood-masks hanging on poles out front.
Two men with crossbows and short swords, dressed in thick cloaks and brigandine armor, stand guard near the entrance of the timber building. A latched chest sits nearby, and an unlit lantern on top of that.
They nod to Domenica as she draws near.
One says,
