Nowhere there does it say it only affects magical effects. It "blocks any attempt to possess the warded creature...or to exercise mental control over the creature...." That includes extraordinary effects.SRD wrote:Second, the barrier blocks any attempt to possess the warded creature (by a magic jar attack, for example) or to exercise mental control over the creature (including...effects that grant the caster ongoing control over the subject, such as dominate person). The protection does not prevent such effects from targeting the protected creature, but it suppresses the effect for the duration of the protection from evil effect.

The block is regardless of alignment.EO wrote:Protection from Evil was altered in 3E Ravenloft to only work if the evil target is known to be evil. If Obedients aren't quite conscious of the evil nature of D'Honaire, then it wouldn't work.
Yeah, Nathan was saying the same thing, IIRC. I can see that.I think that in the RLDMG, it's stated somewhere that immunities do not work on Darklords. The immunity turns into a + 4 bonus to the appropriate saving throw.

Which one?DocBeard wrote:Yeah, that's an important but easy to forget rule...
Yeah, well the Obedient is ambiguously and conflictingly written. The original writeup had the Obedient as glassy-eyed people who were obviously controlled, like with normal Domination. Now they are like sleeper agents, doing whatever they want until Dominic issues an order at which point...what? Do they get glassy-eyed again? According to LotB Dominic's orders are so pervasive that he's written parts for people as if they were in a play. That's a lot of control, and from the sound of it, they show no sign of having any will of their own. What's the DC to tell that someone is an Obedient using Sense Motive? Does it ever change? Also, man, the Obedient ability is way overpowered. It should at least take some nightmarish brainwashing ritual to have that level of dominance over someone on an indefinite basis.

To go with what seems best to me story-wise, I'd let it be a thorn in his side, like Rotipher said, but not be 100% effective, to prevent it from becoming his complete downfall. So I'd say it blocks new commands, though old ones would remain in effect, and it can't be complete immunity, since Dominic is a darklord. Maybe the Obedient gets a save to ignore the new command, with a +4 bonus.

I guess it depends on what sort of Dominic you want. On one hand, a more natural method of control is a bit easier to deal with and fitting for the feel of the domain, but on the other hand that sort of thing's very much Jackie and the Twins's shtick, and how many pampered manipulative nobleperson Darklords do we really need?
Personally, I feel like, "Domination's usually a short term thing unless you are doing an intricate ritual." solves this problem for us. Obediants can be a type of humanoid monster, maybe a subtler breed of Foulspawn that are created by prolonged exposure to psychic power, or just the emotionally exhausting experience of life in Dementielu. Letting Uncle Dominic do all the thinking for you is really the only sane response to such an insane world.
Dominic's darklord powers let him take direct control of people in the short term as a psychic attack(Personally, I make him a full blown psion, but it'd be just as easy to explain it as Dark Powers-enhanced manipulation. His curse would give him a penalty for people he's attracted to or manipulations that would result in his romantic gratification.), but for reliable long term agents he's got to scheme and twist people like every other big bad. Dominic still gets to do his scary thing, but its a little more consistent and a little less, "Oh, well, uh, I guess everyone in the domain is his sleeper agent.".

I always felt extraordinary abilites are not affected by any magical spell since it says they are not affected by any spell that disrupt or negate magic. If you feel in your campaign that protection from evil affects an extraordinary ability.I say ok its your campaign.
