Is this from the published materials, or your own take on the Shadowlands?

First I've heard of it, and I've delved pretty deep in the Shadowlands.

I believe it was mentioned in a Dungeon article featuring Ebonbane... sadly, I don't have a copy... can anyone verify?

I have it, and I don't see any mention of Mystara. The adventure does rely on the idea that one of the PC's is a distant relative of Kateri, implying that she and Ebonbane came from the PC's own world (which the module says could be DL, FR, or GH for example). So if someone with a PC from Mystara ran through the adventure, I could see that they might be led to believe that the Great Kingdom, etc, came from Mystara. But that would be only true in that particular campaign.

Thanks! I'll edit my earlier post.

Like I said, light speculation.
(same goes for Rokushima and Kara Tur, IIRC)
The Oriental domains have been linked to Kara-Tur by "Domains of Dread," I think.
That's so light it's not even really worth considering. It's literally "some guy somewhere said he thought it might be." There's really nothing to support such speculation in either Ravenloft or Mystara. I'm pretty sure that if that was the case TSR would have jumped all over it during the 2nd ed. era when they were shoehorning darklords into settings they were previously not established from (such as Domains of Dread making Meredoth from Mystara and Zolnik from Birthright). I'm also pretty sure that developers deliberately avoided tying Strahd or Barovia to any established setting for a reason, probably for the same reason they avoided defining the Dark Powers.

Vorostokov is from Birthright if my memory serves me right. It's been quite some years.
It was torn from either Rjurik or Vos lands.

Someone on ENWorld started a thread called "If I combine the Dark Sun and Ravenloft settings, I get..." a long time ago. Out of that grew a patronage project from Lewis Porter Junior Design for the campaign setting coined Obsidian Twilight. It is being developed for OGL/Pathfinder system. Check out their products homepage and accompanying blog.

The Birthright angle was only added later.

Sometimes the TSR guys retconned or added things to RL in order to establish 'new' ties with the other TSR settings. I suppose that they thought that it might help crossover sales.

Azalin wasn't originally described as being from Oerth. Another Darklord whose world of origin waa murky, and turned out to be a published setting in later canon.

Really? I thought Zolnik's stats in both Domains of Dread and Dark of the Moon included bloodline abilities and stated that he came from Cerilia. Was there a more ambiguous version of the domain in the Red Box?

Nope, he's not in the Red Box at all. Zolnik was first described in Darklords, with no Birthright connection. Dark of the Moon doesn't have any mention of it either. The background in Cerillia and associated abilities are only found in Domains of Dread, which is the source of many of these retro-active crossovers, IIRC.

That's mainly because Darklords and Dark of the Moon were published almost 5 years before the Birthright campaign was released.

Been meaning to confirm this for a while. finally looke dit up. Indeed, Rokushima does not even appear in Domains of Dread, and in it's original Red Box writeup, the only mention of Kara Tur is that you can use oriental monsters from the Kara Tur MC. I'Cath is from Kara Tur, according to Islands of Terror, and confirmed in DoD.

It is a tasteless, no he horror theme.

I had my head:
1.Super Weapon
D-sun is partly postapokalptic - use of local Super-Weapon (defilingmagic) destroyed the planet
I tend to disagree with you here. It is far from the most boring domain and I don't really see the tastelessness although I might be missing something. I see the horror of the situation quite well. It doesn't have werewolves or vampires but it is quite horrifying nonetheless.

Put my two cents in here. I'm okay with Kalidnay. It is not the greatest domain and to be honest I never really cared about Darksun anyways. That said I would still use it. I may tweak a few things but I think it would fit right at home in my second core.
