The Palace of Purity, Phiraz
May 23rd, 761, 10:54 AM; Day 66 of the Menetnashte Expedition

"Very well then. You may deliver any messages that must reach me quickly through my Lord Vizier. You will need a Confessor liason..." The angelic Prophet tapped his chin for a few moments. "You've met with Judge Jalil al-Shirazi, I take it? Then he shall be your liason with the Confessors, at need. And that takes care of everything. You are dismissed. The prisoner is to be released."

The chains were struck from the tired-looking Prof. Devereux, and the Dementlieuse academic was guided back to the rest of the Expedition. It was oddly good to have the stork-like man back, even if it probably meant you'd get to listen to more conspiracy theories from here on out.

The Vizier bowed briefly to Diamabel, and motioned for you to follow. Slowly, you departed the audience chamber, the continuing choir sounding even as you left the palace.

"Right, well..." Samael said quietly as you departed the Palace. "You eight did most of the work back in Hazlan, so you go on and talk to the Vizier. We still need to outfit the Expedition."

"Good luck."

The Estate of Vizier al-Mustafa, High Quarter, Phiraz
May 23rd, 761, 11:36 AM; Day 66 of the Menetnashte Expedition

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vizier al-Mustafa led you back into the High Quarter of Phiraz, across the causeway from the Palace of Purity. Escorted by a dozen private soldiers of the Pharazian watch, you noticed a decided lack of Confessors around the estate. Instead, a small army of clerks scurried around the beautiful building, a smaller construction of white-plastered brick, but interspersed with stained glasswork of a marvelous hue.

After directing a few clerks to draw up the necessary documents, al-Mustafa lead you into an office, a spartan room with a desk stacked high with parchments and scrolls and books, a globe the only other object in the room aside from a dozen chairs. A large map of the City of Phiraz was located on a wall.

"You must excuse the mess, I fear." Al-Mustafa said as he started rummaging around drawers. As soon as you were away from Diamabel, the Vizier had dropped into a rather more informal tone of voice. The professional-looking guards, however, were never very far. "Government work, you might imagine. Nothing is ever given on time."

"Ah, here we are! The Confessor reports on the last four attacks." The Vizier brandished a sheaf of papers proudly.

"Let's see now... The first attack was May 19th, around midnight. Four bravos from a rather unpleasant locale named the Nest of Many Serpents in the Lower Quarter were ambushed and killed. The bodies were torn apart as by an entity of impressive manual strength. Still, they were low-lifes, and as such the attack wasn't considered greatly surprising, although the execution of it was unusual. Their faces were mentioned as mutilated in the report, and the investigating Confessor indicated the possibility of magic of some sort. Peculiarly also, no blood was found leading away from the scene."

Al-Mustafa grimaced apologetically, not pleased to be reporting this. "You must understand, Phiraz is a city of a hundred-thousand. Much though it is distressing to admit, we are no strangers to violent death particularly in the Lower Quarter, which is why this wasn't fully examined till later."

"Second attack was the next day, May 20th, not three blocks from my manor, actually. At 11:57, several servants, and myself, were awakened by screams of profound agony, which lasted for about a minute. An immediate party of armed guards was formed from the nearby manors, but when they arrived at 12:04, the attacker was gone. Left behind were two faceless, mangled bodies, belonging to the youngest son of Bey Marashalim and his fiance'. At this point a curfew was instituted until someone could find out what was going on. Also, the presiding priest detected that the deceased had their souls stolen or destroyed during the attack."

A sudden chill seemed to enter the room with those words, a vile and vicious coldness that pierced the soul.

"Third attack was May 21st, around midnight, but not discovered till morning. A family of three was slain in the Slaughter District. Again, the bodies were torn apart, and were lacking faces and, after a priest was brough in, souls. Most curiously, the doors and windows were all locked and showed no signs of being tampered with."

The Vizier continued to read and summarize the reports, his voice soft and hushed, the litany of death and destruction flowing past the ears of his listeners.

"And finally... last night, May 22nd, at a quarter till twelve, a citizeness, Lahlia Ershadi, said she saw strange lights in an alleyway while walking along the the Street of Sparrows in the Old Quarter. She was frightened, and ran immediately for the Temple of Sparrows at the end of the street. The lights followed her in the darkness down the street but did not enter the Temple grounds, and by the time citizeness Ershadi woke the priest, they were gone. Since there were no other attacks last night, I think citizeness Ershadi managed to have a narrow escape from the fiend. She's staying at the Temple of Sparrows right now, for her own protection."

The Vizier put down the papers, rubbing his chin in frustration. "As unpleasant a course of events as I've ever seen. And if something isn't done soon, we'll have panic on the streets, perhaps even riots or lynchings."

"Consecutive days at midnight," Charles notes. "It smacks of a ritual of some kind...or a murderer with a very curious idee fixe. We may hope that the failure to dispose of the fortunate M'selle Ershadi has disrupted any ritual...she seems to have been very lucky indeed."

"And there are several spells which affect the soul...it may not be a demon per se...but someone utilizing magic that no good sort should." Andre offered, considering the information just given to them himself.

"I'd think our first task after this would be to investigate that street...and speak with the only so far potential surviving target." He looked to the others "It's possible what happened was entirely unrelated. But the fact that the light wouldn't enter temple ground...worries me."

"So whatever this thing is," Lia notes after the Vizier's summary of the murders, "it may be incorporeal. Or capable of rendering itself thus, the better to enter the homes of its victims.

Just to be certain: were none of the victims even remotely related to one another? Was there any historical significance to the places where they were killed? And did none of the priests called in to survey the sites of the murders detect any kind of supernatural presence?"

"Each time, it's been in a different part of the city," Kuzan realized, "It's like the killer is working its way through the city. And it's...sort of in order. All of the attacks have been in the south and west so far. I...would bet that if there's one tonight, it's in the Artisan District." The priest's face was grim as he pronounced his revelation, and his face turned pale as he continued.

"There's something you all must know about this, though," he said, "The Angra Mainyu is not nice. It's a term for the personification of evil itself and has the power of a god. Such a thing does exist, and if this soul-stealer is the Angra Mainyu, we are as good as dead if we encounter it. They say that gods work in mysterious ways, so I won't even pretend to know why it acts the way it does here, but I pray again and again that this is not the Angra Mainyu. And if it is, I pray for all our souls. Walk carefully."

The thought of not being able to reincarnate in the next life chilled Kuzan to his core.

The small, pot-bellied Vizier listened carefully to Lia's questions, stroking his chin as he thought.

"To the first, miss, no relation that I can think of. A gang of toughs, a pair of noble lovers, a tradesman's family, and I believe citizeness Ershadi works as an attendant at the Baths of al-Karim. It is possible that citizeness Ershadi met some of the others over the course of her work, perhaps the butcher and his family, but beyond that, nothing comes to mind."

"As to the second, again, not that I know of. The first attack was in an alleyway, the second in a secluded park, the third in home, the final along a wide street. I fail to see either rhyme or reason in any of these locations."

"And as to the last... they did not report any such."

Charles seems remarkably calm in the face of Kuzan's solemn announcement. Perhaps it is merely the result of a deistic upbringing, or the fact that the Prophet seems to think this is some merely terrestrial bogeyman, but even the phrase "has the power of a god" seems to have little impact on him. All in all, it seems unlikely to him that some divine incarnation of evil has appeared merely to perform penny-ante tricks like random murders, no matter how horrifying. It's much more probable that the term "Angra Mainyu" is mere hyperbole, applied to a dangerous but by no means invincible creature of the night.

So it is with a near-normal cheeriness that he speaks. "So," he says. "It sounds like we don't know nearly enough yet to find out where this...thing...will strike next. I suppose we had better split up--someone should go interview M'selle Ershadi, while the rest investigate the crime scenes. Each group will need someone who speaks Pharazian, I would think, and as long as it's daylight we should be reasonably free from supernatural interference, at least. So I think we can chance groups of two and three. M'selle Mourneswaith and I need to visit the library and pick up the books we set aside for copying, so we make a natural pairing. We might proceed on to interview M'selle Ershadi afterward, as well."

"And while we are there," Lia notes, "we can search the historical archives for any relevance to the locations where murders have already taken place. They may not be signifcant now, but who knows what kind of buildings stood in their place a hundred or more years ago?"
Kaitou Kage wrote:"There's something you all must know about this, though. The Angra Mainyu is a term for the personification of evil itself and has the power of a god. Lia limps over to Kuzan and briefly puts a hand on his shoulder. "If it is the very entity you fear," she says, "surely its presence will not be wholly unopposed. Is there no good to balance this evil, which might be called upon to drive it out? Or might we be its agents in this matter, and so request its aid?"

"I have a particularly useful kind of magic available today," the priest spoke up, "and if we're still at it tomorrow, I can ready more. At any rate, the spell will link another's sight to me. It will allow me to see through someone else's eyes if I want, and the link persists for several hours. At the very least, with the sending stone Sam has, it will let me keep further track of everyone. That way, if something happens to someone else, I can have a general idea of what's going on."

He knew he was rambling on a bit, but he always had trouble explaining magic effects to people. He just prayed and the magic came.

"I've mostly healing prepared today...but now that we're operating under less...strict rules..The same spell i used against our last foe should come in handy." Andre offered, as he tried to puzzle out some connection between the victims "Apparently, although it burns wicked mortals..it's absolutely unforgiving to demons and their ilk. Or at least the research i did on the spell suggests such." He sighed, and realized that Josette would've been in her element here, and would get whatever it was that he was missing...some connection, some clue.

"For my part, my...gifts would be of less use here, as we are out of the forest, " Otto spoke up from the back of the group, "...but I may be able to pull something from my sleeve if we are in a pinch."

The gunsmith sounded remarkably hearty, given the circumstances: not cheery per se, but definitely ready to get some serious work done.

So, you've got a case study here: you get commissioned by absolute good to find absolute evil, and you get to investigate for yourself whether either of them are really absolute. If somebody hadn't left a serial killer in your philosophy lesson, you could almost look forward to this...

...Take the rough stuff as it comes, though; no matter what you see, you can't say anymore that you haven't seen just as bad before. Hey: it's another way to fix the world. And that's what you're in it for now, right?

"...However, I would be more than happy to investigate a scene of crime, yes? Whatever I can be doing to help... Would anybody care to be my translator?"

"I can handle translation for you, Otto." Andre offered, turning towards the Lamordian. Analytical sort, should be helpful. Both of us checking over the scene should be able to find something. And may get a chance to inquire about his experience back in Barovia.. Andre thought to himself, wracking his brain as to how an actual demon would get to Phiraz...and if it would be worse to be facing a spell casting mortal, or a soul stealing demon.

Neither, it turned out, were a particularly good option.

The Desert Guide had remained quiet until know but added: "Perhaps fortunatley I have acquired some small articles that make my scimiatrs far more deadly against more magical foes." He pats the hilts of his blades where twin tiger-eye stones are now set, that glint lightly beneath the peace-bond. "And if this is a djinni we face I would be more than pleased to test their keeness."

Khalil paused and looked thoughtful then spoke up again this time with a wary glance at the Vizier. "if I may I have a suggestion that may be of some use in this situation. We must remember that we are all Franj or foreigners to the people of Phiraz, it may prove difficult to gain the information we require whilst many of our party are so obtrusively marked out as different."

He gestures to their green armbands and the complexions of many of the party. "However I am most capable of blending in, at least superficially with the local crowd, provising of course I can be free of this." He taps the armband meaningfully. "Perhaps I may be able to better gain information in certain quarters than a large mob of obvious Franj?"

"However I think after our experieince in the land of the red wizards it is paramount none of us travel alone, therefore is any of you capable of altering your appearnace either through magical means or with a simple disguise so you may come with me?"
"I had a dream, which was not all a dream.
The bright sun was extinguish'd, and the stars
Did wander darkling in the eternal space..."

"There is," Kuzan murmured in response to Lia. Images came into his mind, visions and dreams of something he'd rather forget. "But if we are facing something with the power of a god, I doubt our survival in any case."

He shook it all off and rubbed his eyes. "I can't speak the native language and I'm not sure I'd speak any of the languages in the library." He hadn't been to the library yet, so he had no way to know what languages were readily available. "So I suppose I'm best suited going to see the scenes, unless the survivor speaks something I know or one of the other groups needs my...ah...talents."

The priest glanced to the Vizier. "I trained in medicine at the University of Tvashtri," he explained, "Is it possible to see the bodies? I might be able to learn something new if I can spend a few hours examining them."

The Vizier contemplated this for a brief moment, then shook his head.

"I am sorry, but I am afraid I cannot allow this. You may certainly go wherever you wish, and you will have papers if you need to request aid from the authorities, but I do not see the need to let you go unnoticed through the city."

"And regardless, this Angra Mainyu is not likely to be hiding amongst the populace."
Kaitou Kage wrote:The priest glanced to the Vizier. "I trained in medicine at the University of Tvashtri," he explained, "Is it possible to see the bodies? I might be able to learn something new if I can spend a few hours examining them."
Vizier al-Mustafa nodded, calling to a servant to bring in another sheaf of records. Flipping through them, the old minister found the information he had wanted.

"The four ruffians who perished in the first attack have already recieved pauper's burials in the Necropolis, the city maintains a fund for such necessities. The Bey's son and his fiance are currently being interred into sarcophagi by a... Rahul, in the Lower Quarter. A good professional, I am told, he's also preparing their mausoleum. The butcher and his family have been left on the scene and preserved by magics, in hopes that something more can be learned from the scene."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few minutes later, another servant entered the office, whispering briefly into the Vizier's ear. The old man nodded in understanding, and then stood from behind his paper-strewn desk.

"I am sorry to say that I have an appointment I have to keep now, but if you need any assisstance, any whatsoever, my clerks here will know where to find me if I am not present myself."

"I wish you luck."

[OOC: Alrighty, here's the big splitting-up part. Possible avenues of investigation include:
  • -The Nest of Many Serpents: A seedy bar and criminal-type dive, the first murders occurred right outside its doors. Also a good place to plug into the local underworld, if you have an 'in' of some sort. Located in the Lower Quarter, and a nasty part thereof.

-The Necropolis: The vast graveyard of Phiraz, the first four bodies have been moved there now. Presumably the gravekeeper can direct you to them.

-The Park of Eleven Fountains: Scene of the second murders, this occurred in the nobles' district of the High Quarter.

-Rahul the Stonemason: The man preparing the sarcophagi for the two wealthier victims, their bodies are currently located there as he carves effigies of them.

-The home of Makram the Butcher: The best preserved crime scene, this is where Tomas was earlier, and where the three bodies are still present.

-The Temple of the Sparrows: A small church in the Old Quarter, this is near the scene of the fourth attack and is where Ms. Ershadi is currently staying.

-The Library of Phiraz: You might find information on Angra Mainyu here.

-Check to see if there are sewers or catacombs beneath Phiraz, for Tomas's mystery screams.]
