ATLI'S OFFICE

TORTHUR

Having spent the night resting after getting Lora situated at the tavern, Torthur now tramps into Riverside to see his fellow dwarf, Atli.

He finds the moneylender muching rock candy in his office, reading a ledger.

Atli grins as Torthur comes into the small, dim room.
“Good job with the barge.”
He stares at Torthur a moment, golden eyes flickering in the low light.
Switching to the guttural Dwarf-speech, Atli asks,
“Something rusting your spade, cousin?”

Torthur nods, replying in dwarf tongue as well. "Yeah, somethin grinds me gears, Atli. As yer well knowin, we were successful, n now Roald has he a barge. On tha barge, I finded a las, human. In a barrel of all tha places. She been there fer days I suspectin. She hid there from Duke Carlion's brother. DUnno 'is name. APparently he liked ter beat the lass, n good. I hear stuff, sometimes. About slavers.
You shoulda seen this woman. She was in a bad state, name of Lora. Now she is workin at the tavern an I been seein only red acuz o this Duke's brother. Treatin a woman like that, ain't right. I got it in me head ter teach him a lesson he won't forget. At tha same time I kin git imprtant infermation bout Duke Carlion."

He looks at Atli. "I be meanin ta go into, Lofton and teach this Duke's brother a lesson. I am seein yer fer this reason. I needs a few things an I figger yer the one ter see. I got me cut from the barge an the other time to pay fer it. This is what I am hopin yer kin do fer me or help me with."

He stretches. "I need to git into Lofton unnoticed. With Clyde. I want a map o Lofton, someone there ter get me around an help me. A secretive type, one you trust. A plan o Duke's castle, an his brothers itinerary and where he lives in tha castle. Some kinna equipment ter climb would be good. I also wants the guard positions an when they change. This is some serious idea I got. I figger like I done said, I kin also git some infermation at tha same time an bring it back alive if'n I make it back out alive which I plans ter do. I only askin yer one favor. Keep yer eyes out fer tha tavern while I be gone. I kinna grown ter be likin the place. I invested some a me gold in it fer me ale makin an helpin out. I figger with Mons Megs gone, someone needs ter take care o tha place. Lora gonna be good there I think, she just needed a chance from someone."

Atli discusses the tavern business first; offering a drink to his fellow dwarf while he does some calculations summons and dismisses hirelings, etc.
“I think we can make a go of your newly acquired tavern. I’ll be happy to invest in it with you and Meg’s heir. He’s just a small manling, isn’t he? You’ll be the one really running the operation.”

Once the ordinary sort of business has been taken care of, Atli receives a middling size man almost as dark-skinned as Atli, with short curly hair and aquiline features. The stranger (strange to Torthur, at any rate) wears a long navy blue cloak with a lyrepipe hood. He bows before Atli.
‘‘Master Atli, how may I serve?”

Atli replies, “Petrus, I want you to get my friend here into Lofton, unrecognized.”

The dark man laughs. “That’s too easy.”

Atli laughs. “With his bear.”

The dark man frowns. “A bear? Well…hmmm…” He laughs. “I have an idea!”

…
TAXIDERMIST SHOP

The taxidermist repeats his estimate.
“Can’t have it done before the end of the next week at the very soonest, and that’s dropping my other work, which will cost you extra. But yeah, I can do it….”
He measures Torthur again.
“You are going make a cute baby bear. This is for a stage play, you said?”
…

ATLI’S OFFICE A LITTLE LATER

“I got sketches for maps, a man asking after the target’s habits, some rope and spikes and such for you. You can pay me later. “

Atli jots down charges in his ledger.

HEADING SOUTH, GHONALLISON COUNTRYSIDE

FOERDE

After a night spent crowded into an abandoned barn, Foerde, Fhylie, the Spears, and the refugees head south at first light.

Scouting ahead, Foerde notices some faint wisps of smoke in the clear, bright morning sky, coming from the opposite side of a long, low ridge not far east of the rotting corduroy road.
FOERDE

Riding back to the rest of the group Foerde reports his findings to Fhylie. "There is some smoke coming from the other side of a long low ridge just east of the corduroy road. I suggest we have the spears and my men stay back to guard the refugees while we investigate further."
"I agree."

She issues orders to her second , who relays these to the other fighting-men.

After methodically checking all her war gear-- and Foerde's---she steps to the side of her chestnut mare and swings her compact body into the saddle.

The Pleasure Barge

Roald sheaths his sword and stares down at the priestess and her guards for a moment before walking down the gangplank. When he reaches the priestess, he smiles and says, "If His Holiness wishes to to use Carlion's Pleasure Barge, I would be happy to move him up to the head of the line." He gestures at the crowd. "As you can see, it's become quite the spectacle."

"Of course, noble sir."

The priestess leads on.

Guardsmen try their best to keep the admiring crowd from swarming Roald-- and from getting onto the boat!

They succeed admirably at the latter task, but Roald himself is accosted by a number of young women who press their bodies against his, kiss him, and snatch at his clothing.

When he emerges from the feminine gauntlet on the far end, he's ruffled but unharmed.

The priestess giggles, blushes again, and walks on at a faster pace.

The Archprelate’s half-dozen swordsmen fall in around Roald, glaring imperiously at any common folk who get too close to their charge.

Fhylie looks around the hilly, thinly wooded countryside, paying special attention to the ridgeline running crosswise about a bowshot ahead of her position.
'''Let's ride to the east a little ways, paralleling the ridge. You've always had good luck spotting trouble, even if you've never been great at stealth--you dismount and try your best to creep round the low end of the rise for a peek at the other side.''

She points to likely places for Foerde to do a little recon legwork.

''I'll stay mounted in a low spot, near some bushes, and rush to your aid if you get into trouble. If there are too many enemies, I'll cover you while you sprint back to your horse and we both ride hard for that thick stand of pine trees we passed on the way here. ''

"Right."

Foerde rides along with Fhylie to the destination and then dismounts. He quickly surveys the area and then nods to Fhylie.

On foot he heads to the first of the recon locations she pointed out..

...

Foerde works his way round to a low sheltered spot with rocks and earth rising on either side, a good place to hide and peek at what lays beyond the ridgeline.
He sees more hills, more patches of trees, grassy swales dotted with wildflowers. Looking west along the back of the ridge, he spots a clump of nine cloaked figures circled round what appears to be a smoldering campfire, blackened logs sticking out of a divot or pit in the earth. The figures, about a spear cast distant, remain very still—all but one, the back of which waggles a little as if the person is rocking back and forth on his pelvis.
A west-blowing breeze kicks up; carrying wisps of wood smoke to Foerde’s twitching nostrils, along with a sour stench like curdled milk.

Foerde hears a faint rustle of movement behind him. A hawk flashes past a few yards above him, soars out across the countryside ahead, wheels, and vanishes into the west.

Foerde turns to see what is behind him, one hand hovering above the hilt of his war sword.

Streets of Haes

Roald straightens his clothing as he walks with the Haelynites.

He glances at the priestess who's name he can't place. "So, I don't suppose I could get a hint as to why the Archprelate want's to see me? I'm honored, of course. But it's rather surprising he would ask to see a man such as I."

Empty air.

Maybe it was the hawk that he heard. Maybe not...
