1) My post assumed that Varian did pay, and the DM never asked me to edit. Caitlin might be mistaken, she might be covering for her nutty uncle, or she might be a liar and a cheat. Varian paid.

2) Neither my PC nor Tarlyn's PC have any reason at all to obey the mayor, stay in town, or even help the locals. We have no local ties. Something bad is going on. Since the PCs arrived, the locals have been rude and secretive. Not only has no one asked for our help, but we have seen that when the cleric offered to help his help was rejected.

3)Our dudes are bouncing because we are good roleplayers. I grok that Caitlin's loyalties and local ties will probably take her in a different direction, because you are a good RPer, too.

She is none of the above. Varian paid: and then tried to extort a refund.

I suppose she should have said "Failed Welcher", but I'm not sure that would have gone over any better!

Oh sure! But remember, this isn't a lovely country town in ye olde englande. The mayor is not the elected representative of the people, he's the local representative of an absolutist dictatorship. It just doesn't seem reasonable to get so angry with your innkeeper when all of your complaints are against the Mayor. He's the one who told everyone to stay inside: he's the one who rejected the offer of help. Caitlin is just assuming an ulterior motive for flying off the handle at her uncle, when there is no obvious reason to do so.

Fascinating stuff, Kintire, but it's unlikely to come up in play unless she chases after Varian and Xavril and pleads with them to stay and help to overthrow the ungodly and corrupt mayor, hater of righteous clerics and enabler of dishonest innkeepers.

I think that poster just inspired an alternate history Ravenloft game.

The players are agents of the Kargat in the 1930's trying to survive in Darkon-occupied Falkovnia. They are facing off against an enemy from the Barovian Intelligence Service and only the powers of an ancient red gem can save them.
