I think you've hit the proverbial stake with the hammer perfectly there. You can't expect to simply remove racism from a story created during a time during which so many people were never concerned about racism. Unfortunately, people often prefer to do what is easy rather than what is best. Stealing something from the public domain to start with is far more commonplace than it probably should be. It's one thing to use that as a starting point. It's another thing to just scrape off the serial number and sell it as a new product.
