Oh, agreed.

Alignment is more a set of guidelines than hard rules, but it's still something that's ultimately up to the DM to adjudicate. Thus, arguments about it are usuaully a waste of game time.

What matters to me is consistent, plausible, and fun RP. Alignment can help that.

And of course, alignment may have little to do with a chatacter's self-perception. It may not have much with how others see him, depending on the context and the characters involved.
