What I need to know ( assuming Alfonse will warn those in the cellar that the Watch may possibly arrive soon):

Is the party going out of the building through the door Gertie just opened? Gem will sniff that way, very eager.

If you guys open it and look through:
VIEW CONTENT:
It leads into a tunnel/corridor with masonry walls and a low ceiling. About four yards from the entrance, this corridor ends in short run of stairs that lead to a doorway set at an acute angle above the steps in a wooden frame.
Like a storm cellar door.
That far door does not appear to be latched or bolted from the inside, should you shine a lantern toward it.
Feel free to quote this spoiler box info if you open the door , IC.

Is the party leaving the building by an exit , topside?

Remaining in the building and waiting/ searching/ hiding?

Doing something else entirely?

I don't ask any of this to hit you with leading questions, but just to make sure players have info, and nobody had misunderstood what the PCs know of their situation.

Maybe we can vote :

Gertie votes to exit through the door they just opened...

If there is an actual vote, let us see that in character.

And if somebody takes the leadership role now and just executes an action, then let's see that in IC.

Not knowing the guard is coming: Fild would say hunt them.
Learning the guard is coming: Fild would say leave, dip something in the blood of the survivor to keep his scent and come later in the night to pick up the trail. He will remind everyone that they should not drop Alfon's name to get away from the guard if it can be avoided.

Well since we don't know about the watch the logical thing to do is to pursue them, we opened the door so we have no reason to leave.

Tom will get the bottles and go inside first since he can see at the dark. He will tell Gertie or whoever has the lantern to go for last hoping the lantern's heat will not disrupt his infravision.

Hmm, well Alfonse acted without reading the OOC thread. So I would recommend continuing your search.

01%

And

10%

He ghosts out.

So stealthily, indeed, that Alfonse has no idea where Damien went, if he's hiding in the house, or what.
Ninja vanish.

I knew they were bad at their job. That's why Aldron needs us. We should put that in our resume "better investigators than the watch"

So, we're Tom, Fild, Gertie inside the tunnel, Damien ninja-ing and Alfonse with the guards?

Yes:

Tunnel

Tom, Gertie, Fild...and Gem!

Vineyard with guards:

Alfonse

Vanished like a bawse ninja:
Damien

.....

And, right, the Watch is not made of trained investigators. It does streets patrols-- esp. at night, stops crimes in progress, protects water supply, guards municipal figures, quells riots, breaks up street fights, etc. But one of their main jobs is actually putting out fires.

These are based , among other things, on the old Roman vigiles.

So it's not so much that they are bad at their job- it's just that investigation and detection really are not their job. These things are incidental tasks they do in the course of patrols.
(This is why people hire adventurers for that kind of stuff.)

If you want to find out their fire fighting skills, carry out your arson threat:)

You will find out about their polearm skills if you get caught setting a fire.
;)

Incidentally, if you are wondering about how the city gov't investigates serious crimes:

Magistrates are empowered to look into crimes. They are mostly political appointees. A minority have investigative skills of their own, and for important cases many employ skilled hirelings.

Given that half the party members are thieves, I think this knowledge falls under the " stuff you are at least somewhat aware of, despite not being natives."

In this setting, what I have described above is not uncommon.
