How far does that Ducat take Titus? It's 10 silver, correct?

It is ten silver, yes.

Equivalent to 10 gold pieces in the typical, hyper-inflated, D&D prices.

A worker with some marketable skills may earn a silver penny a day (not necessarily a silver coin in hand, but could also be payment in kind, room and board plus small coin, etc).

That ducat could get him five days and nights in a private room. He'd be waited upon in decent style , with laundry, bath, meals, wine, etc.

As you can see, the prices may still be inflated-- just not to the completely ridiculous extent normal in D&D, where you almost have to push wheelbarrows of silver around to go shopping.
And prices of goods and services will vary from city to city, place to place.

Specific coin values could also vary because of clipping, debasement, unusual size, rarity, local laws about money changing. Whatever. POVERO coins form a pretty standard set of values.

Fild can afford to pay his fine.

Fild is OK with this, but he doesn't consider Barth even half-way as close as he does with the other humans or the half-elf. He thinks Barth could be useful and he liked how he could be reasoned with for mutual gain.
However, he wouldn't trust a stranger from the pit to tell him about their patron.

A gold ducat gets you 5 decent days... So, you would need a pound of gold and a half to stay in a Middle-class inn for a year in the early renaissance. Well, that price could be within reasonable range above what prices were in Spanish and English metropolises once the American Gold started flowing in.
Povero, as you described it, is a rich, mercantile, big city. Probably the size of Barcelona or Seville during the 16th century. And those were expensive cities.

As such, I think the prices are OK for Povero and surrounding areas. Not a historian, just saying they make sense.

As explained in IC (which may be lost), Fild tried to find out what Barth was accused for. He assumes from the small fine he got in a brawl or something. He's also interested about this thief-catching license.
If the others don't object, he suggests asking around for the price needed and the methods employed by the thief-catchers.

Fild would prefer if Barth and Mook were not in the party meeting.

Right, inflated prices, but not ludicrously so. Standard D&D money is very silly. By design, as it turns out. Gygax explains at some length in the DMG (1E).

You correctly understand my thinking on prices, cities, precious metal flow, etc.

But note that a standard " coin" in D&D does not weigh a pound. It's normally ten to the (somewhat abstract, encumbrance system) pound.
Or did you mean " pound" as in the name for short of money? Livre, as I would probably write/ say?

Did you mean a pound of SIlVER coins?

"Middle class" as something nicer than what I described?

Then there is the question of coin size and weight...
And purity...

LOL, I won't get too detailed without good cause.

Though there is that Coin Collecting Count!
:)

And I will note things like double sized coins of gold or silver, electrum money, visibly clipped coins, and so on.

EDIT
I misread " year" as " week" for some reason.

I considered using the coinage and price lists from A Mighty Fortress (HR) , but decided that would be needlessly exotic. Just shifting to silver standard is probably good enough.

Nope, I assumed the 3E standard of "50 coins = a lb". I.e. I assume that 3 gold pieces would be slightly less than an ounce of gold (1200$ or something these days).
Keep in mind that this means that gold pieces are smaller than copper pieces since 50 gold = a pound of gold and 50 copper = a pound of copper but copper is less dense than gold.

The Pound and a half comes from: 1 gp/5 days = 73 gp for a year = 1 1/2 pounds of gold for a year.

A , I thought I saw WEEK, not year.

Misread on my part.

And I like the 3E rule better. We can go with that.

DM REQUEST

Please add HEADERS to your posts for these split scenes.

I'm not going to get picky about this. I don't always use the headers, myself.
But it may make it easier for everyone to keep on the same page as far as which characters are in which scenes. It also makes it easier for me when and if I go back to reread something.

Thanks.

And thanks for playing.

Fild snapped on the door-waiter that speaks to him behind closed doors and brass tubes.

Reaction roll, with Fild treated as less than friendly but not actually hostile.

Lower is " better"

Fild (and I) had no idea he has to actually join this place. He thinks they just sign a license for money.

The guy insulted Fild.
He strongly implied that Fild lacks the skills to be a Thief Catcher, and requires tutelage like a boy would need. Thus " apprentice."
Add to that the " runt" line, and he's basically called the gnome a snot-nosed kid.

As far as joining the guild goes, it may be that the TCaLR guild restricts competition by limiting membership. That's a common thing for guilds to do. So maybe they don't let just anybody buy in and obtain a certificate.
It may also reject those whose attitudes, character, and reputation could harm the guild's image.

He may make of the situation whenever he will. I provide the material above because he is a native of the setting, though not this city, and the WIS check was a pass.
