I thought that the Esper was more a Psionicist card so they took it out as Psionics wasn't directly a main part of the setting anymore.

True, but somehow the name "Esper" even sounds more MotRD-ish, as it seems derived from a more formal study of psi than the Core really had. I'd think in the Core such a person might be called a "Seer", "Visionary", or just insane/fey-touched/cursed....
