Is Ravenloft Dead?

Post by Matthew L. Martin »

I just picked up the Summer 2005 White Wolf Quarterly/Sword & Sorcery Insider. On the inside cover, they list all releases for the rest of the calendar year.

No Ravenloft products are listed.

Has the line been cancelled?

First, Ravenloft can be dead as it's undead. It rose from its grave once, remember ? :)

And if you look at page 51 of the insider (covering April to June), you have VRGttMists listed for August 2005.

Yes, the Spring 2005 Insider lists it--but the one I just got a hold of is the Summer 2005 one, and there's no trace of it on the shipping schedule, the order form, or the backlist.

I wish I could get ahold of that print copy of WW Insider, they haven't posted the Summer Quarter for download yet, hopefully they will this coming week. Incredibly lame-*** town I live in closed our one-and-only bookstore for two months while they relocate. 50 mile drive to the next closest, so I'll be relying heavily on online information of upcoming releases for sometime to come.

It is, however, in this month's Previews (listed as coming in August). I don't know entirely what's going on, but I'd suspect it's a matter of scheduling.

 If they really stop the line, we will write the books ourselves.

Lack of attention to the line? ;)

OT: Kansas City only has one bookstore? Or do you mean gaming store? I just always thought KC was... larger.

I don't think that they do a bad job; and both a writers of nearly legendary skill... But really, I don't know where sales point to, but the newest RLbooks were not really useful for my game. The MotRD book, however, was a great improvement, AFAIC.

Really? Then how come there seems to be little follow through in the books? How come when a book comes out that is popular the so-called "developers" dive in to take the credit and when a book is unpopular they distance themselves and say "Oh, they're optional rules"?

Case in point: The Ravenloft Player's Handbook and its disaterous "additional material" and Champions of Darkness are considered "optional" and when Van Richten's Guide to the Walking Dead and Legacies of the Blood appeared the "developers" appeared from no where to accept praise.

I'm actually an hour drive away from the city. Interesting night last night, got caught in a sudden storm while driving home, watched a funnel cloud become a tornado just two streets north of me. With all the wind, rain, tornado sirens, and falling tree branches, I drove over a downed power line without realizing it. Yup, I sure do love the rural Mid-West [/sarcasm].

 Ah, but what sort of undead is Ravenloft? A vampire setting that feeds on fan support? A Restless Dead? A lich? A ghost? What could its salient powers be, I wonder, and then, how could it be laid to rest?

Actually, I must confess that I really enjoyed the 3e PHB. It made me become a RL DM. And the Gazs are nearly the best publications ever done for the setting, as far as I experienced. The so called *optional rules*, like CoD or VRA however, are books far, far at the end of my *to buy* list...

What I honestly can't understand is why they do *legacies of blood*, a solid book, but with what exact purpose?, and then DT&DL, a compilation of short stories. Now, without having read the later one, I personally don't feel that I can justify 30$ for that.

Now, no company trolling here, but while the fan base is demanding concrete measures like Gaz V, a book on the clusters and pocket domains etc. (Or another MotRD supplement), S&S goes another way.

While, of course, I can't judge books I haven't read, I must say that apart from the Gazs, my recent RL investments were all 2e products on ebay.
As far as the current releases, I am more than sceptical. -Although, of course, I hope that there'll be a greater concentration on the needs of fans in 2006.

>Hope everyone understands my point. No offense, please.<
