Great video games to play with a Gothic atmosphere
Anyone know any good games to play that has a gothic atmosphere? Obviously, the soundtracks to these games are very important to generate the correct 'feel'.
I know of a few...
Timesplitters 2 - Notre Damne level
Call Of Cthulhu- Dark Corners of The Earth
All Castlevania games
Timesplitters 3- Mansion of Madness levels
Vampire Night -PS2
Doom - all platforms
Medievil 1 and 2- PS2
Splatterhouse 1,2 and 3 Arcade and Genesis platform.
All Silent Hill games
Other stuff thats a bit more cutesy. Great, nonetheless.
Ghouls 'n' Ghosts - Graveyard level
Banjo Kazooie -N64- Mad monster Mansion level
Donkey Kong Country - Creepy Castle level
Anyone know of anymore? Love gothic video games. Love 'em.

If you haven't looked into the Fatal Frame series for the PS2 (not sure if it is offered on any other consoles) I would highly recommend it.
While I haven't played the third, the first two were very atmospheric.
The first one was the creepier of the two, but had too much combat; (falling a bit too far into the trap of the FPS genre) while the second had less combat but lacked something of the tension the first invoked. (they needed a few more incidents were monsters sprung out at you unexpectedly - as some of the encounters were a bit too predictable.)
I've been meaning to pick up the third, to see if they found a good balance between the two, but haven't had my PS2 hooked up for about a year.

Phantasmagoria I & II
Gabriel Knight 2
They played like a cheep cinemax soft core at times and the acting was probly the most scarry thing in the game but the creepy gothic horror feel was there.

For those of us who can run it...
Oblivion!
Yeah...the story was terrible for the most part...the villains pretty useless ("I AM THE GREATEST NECROMANCER OF ALL TIME! EVERYONE FEARS ME! BOW DOWN BEFORE ME!" *claymore to the face* "HOW COULD I BE DEFEATED SO EASILY!?")
But once you actually enter Oblivion...it gets pretty insane.

Kill one man and you're a murderer.
Kill ten men and you're a monster.
Kill one hundred and you're a hero.

I will second Fatal Frame: Crimson Butterfly. That game was so scary that I had to quit playing it for a while.
What about Thief: The Dark Project? The climax to that game was so scary! And how about the latest one...Theif: Deadly Shadows? The Shalebridge Cradle level has been hailed as one of the scariest levels ever. And I have to agree with them.

Now I know, now I can divine. The reign of man is over, and He has come....

Yes, Shalebridge deffinately a creepy environment. I found myself well spooked throughout, which rarely occurs when I play games. (though, like I said, Fatal Frame did well - the resident evil games never scared me)
In fact, I'd recommend Deadly Shadows (and the other thief games) for anyone. These were some well thought out and interesting "fps" type games which had the added novelty of relying almost entirely on stealth and rarely requiring one to kill. (in fact, if done properly, you can get through almost the entire game without having to kill a single foe)

How about Blood Omen:Legacy of Kain for the original playstation?
In all honesty, that game probebly got me interested in the whole horror genre again.
It had some good stuff like Gypsies, an insane toymaker, prophecy and all while in a dark, brooding atmosphere. You played as the main character, Kain, and travelled the world of Nosgoth while unravelling clues about the state of the world, which ultimatley led you to either saving or destroying the world.
The follow up games where fun, but where nowere near the level of a gothic atmosphere as the first.
