The soundtrack to Brahm Stoker's Dracula soundtrack is a good one.

Woven Hand and 16 Horsepower. Of course the game I am planning of running is set earlier than the 1890's and is a western...

Not at the moment, it is a game that I have had in the back of my mind for the past several years but unfortunately haven't been able to actually put much effort into.

Oh, and while I am here, another great band that inspires me are The Decemberists. They are a bit more progressive, but write many of their song in the styling of old ballads.

The music by French ensemble Dark Sanctuary is really brooding and moody.

These folks have a great collection of dark themed music that can add mood to your game.

Great film and a great soundtrack!

I'd also suggest the soundtrack to the 1931 Universal Dracula w/ Bela Lugosi which was redone by Kronos Quartet/Philip Glass in 1999.

I always liked playing "Dead can Dance" among other things IMC. Many of their tracks have a feeling of morbid drama, and much like a dirgist song, they quickly build excellent atmosphere.
(Imo, some must-play tracks too, if you found yourselves in Barovia)

Personally, I don't often use music during games, unless it fits with the in-character circumstances. Something classical in the background if the PCs are attending a Dementlieuse ball, for instance, or old vaudeville for a Paridon music-hall setting.

OTOH, I often write Ravenloft material while I'm listening to music. If I hadn't dug out my old CD of Alice Cooper's Constrictor, for example, Colin Graben (new NPC villain from the Nocturnal Sea netbook) would've been a very different character.

Nox Arcana has many fun albums just perfect for Gothic gaming. "Carnival of Shadows" and "Winter's Knight" are my two personal favorites. (Though if you use Winter's Knight, watch out toward the end of the CD, lest your players be distracted and begin wondering why the heck you're playing *Christmas* music...It is, technically, a Christmas album. Great rendition of Veni Veni Emmanuel, though...:D)

Ohhhhh, I'm going to try these out at the next module I run out of the house. Hopefully at Halloween time :)

I have the house all decked out for Halloween, so I think the setting plus the music is going to really add to the horror modules I run.

Thanks for the ideas!

/cheers!
