Marsember

During the pre-dawn hours, a dozen or so small fires had broken out across the central district of Marsember. All these lesser fires were put out before the damage could become truly extensive.

The sun crawls over the horizon at the expected hour, but its feeble rays cannot dispel the haze that overhangs all Marsember- the thick mix of smoke and fog that makes morning seem as evening, and summer as autumn.

Last night’s conflagration has left Morningmist Hall little more than a great heap of ash, fallen walls, and broken beams. Only the scorched basilica stands more-or-less intact.
Sad little clumps of mourners gather in the streets and canal-sides about the fallen temple, despair and fear etched into the pale, drawn faces. Some join those volunteers and watchmen who are yet working to recover the dead.

Today the taverns and pubs of the port city are packed, even at this early hour. Discussions revolve around the eminent arrival of the royal party and, of course, last night’s arson and murders at the temple of Lathander.

In the backroom of one pub, a party of city watchmen and their allies has spent the past few hours planning and preparing for a mission of justice and retribution. Now, the ranking officer of the militia, Watch-Captain Rask, asks the team one simple question:

''Are we ready?''

an hour later...outside the Fane of Myrkul in the slums near the Marsh Gate

The numerous detachments of Purple Dragons and city militia have surrounded the Fane of Myrkul, cutting off all known routes of escape. Of course, in the maze-like slums, there might still be some secret backdoor that has yet to be discovered.

The Fane is a two storey building, once an old 'many-doors' tenement, now converted to a religious purpose. It's made of the same peeling plaster and slate tile as many of the city's buildings. From the outside, it doesn't look like much of anything. Grinning skulls painted on the doors are the only indication of its true nature.

Watch-Captain Rask turns to Lieutenant Guischard,

''You let me know when you are ready to send in the gnome.''

Once through a window, Threan moves about inside the unlit hall. The semi-darkness is no obstacle for him, of course. He can see everything just fine: the window frame, the unadorned walls, his hands...

His hands! He’s suddenly become visible!

A noise behind the gnome alerts him to the attacker's presence in time to spin and face it-

A terrible fiend clutching a long pole arm has simply appeared out of thin air a short distance away from Threan. Before the gnome can escape, the creature lashes out with its glaive, opening a nasty wound on Threan's right arm- not too deep, but it burns like hellfire!

Threan launches a savage counterattack against the fiend that towers over him. The gnome leaps and slashes, wounding the hell-spawn twice!

It vanishes into thin air!

The healing belt does not work! The wound remains open and oozing blood.

Threan is able to stop the bleeding with a tightly wrapped bandage.

Just then, that door down the dim hall, the one from which Threan had heard some noise- opens.

A half dozen skeletons march out, headed for the gnome! The undead monsters carry rusty sword and wooden shields.

Threan destroys another skeleton. He easily doges the clumsy attacks of the others.

Threan is struck twice, very hard, in the back!

A quick glance over his shoulder will reveal TWO of those horrible fiends with wickedly barbed glaives! The creatures are holding their weapons to present a barrier to the gnome, should he charge them he must get past the front of their arms.

The skeletons continue to advance.

Threan is between enemies!
