What do you mean sweet Exp . I get that even if I don't kill something . Since I drove it off . That still counts as you pointed out in another game that a Villian got exp for driving(defeating) our party . Only reason to go after it would be to try to get what in it's lair is all if it had anything to begin with from other victims maybe .
You can defeat something without killing it as we all know if you drive it off like if you drove off Dragon lets say 8) .

Alain's Ready actions and contingency actions .
1. He will be helping and/or encouraging the married couple and Pierre to get off the boat with the rest of the crew . After doing this he will be getting off also to solid ground and away from the river's edge and out range of the river monster . He will be taking his horses and gear too while doing this .
2. If interrupted in the above by the monster and able to get off an Orb of Fire, lesser spell he will do so IE if he does not roll against Concealment lets say because of being in water . If concealed by the water and still able see it enough to target with a Magic Missile spell . All 3 missiles hitting the river monster .
3.If able to get a shore without being hindered by the monster then he will take a wait and get to higher ground out of reach of the monster .

Noted.

The thing is so huge that he can vaguely make it out in the water, enough for magic missile.

16 .

These gypsies vaguely remind Alain of some seedy-looking traveling people he once encountered near the city of Greyhawk, on a river-barge. That's all.
