Renn nods in agreement with Cormac. "Beats the hell out of staying here."

He gives the pitiful creature writhing under Roald's boot a look of disinterest. "Done playing with your food?"

"Just one more thing,"Roald says to Renn. He looks to the creature. "Do you know where the traps are placed?

No stranger to being grappled while covered in fluid, Devlin attempts to roll like a crocodile with his opponent, while holding his breath. He holds onto his sword as best he can.

FIGHT IN THE GARDEN

Devlin struggles with his attacker, but can't shake the robed maniac.

Safana conjures fire, scorching herself in the process, but driving her attackers back from the poolhouse.

The giant child wails in fury. It grabs one of the two ladies clinging to its back, throws her to the ground, and batters her with its big fists.

As they battle the party, the finery of the lords and ladies drains of all color, becoming black robes.

GARDEN FIGHT

The giant has smashed two, and Safana's fire has set several others' clothes ablaze, but the robed ones keep coming.
They growl and slobber like rabid dogs.

Safana goes down, swarmed by the frenzied denizens of the garden!

Father Michael fights one against three, weaving in and out among the pool house pillars, slashing and thrusting with his rapier.

Devlin circles round the fray to the place where he last saw Filbert. He searches the bushes and paths, but finds only the halfling's cloak-- wet, torn, and bloodied.
The duke cries out, brandishes his rapier, and charges back to aid Safana.

The woman might already be dead...

...

DEVLIN'S POV

Devlin sprints back, but not fast enough.

The robed attackers carry Father Michael off into the darkness. The priest does not scream, but Devlin catches a glimpse of his face frozen in a rictus of terror.

The giant child cradles the limp form of Safana in its arms. The creatures it had fought lie broken about it like dolls after a toddler's tantrum.

Safana shudders, and climbs slowly to her feet. She shakes herself and murmers an incantaion, glowing slightly for a moment, and then fading to normal, although those who look closely can see a slight shimmer.

"P..paralysis... We have to save the father! And where's Filbert?"

She stares inton the darkness, light glimmering at the tips of her three longest fingers with a faint menace

Cormac chuckles at the one on the ground. "Aye, ye're smarter than ye look."

He spins and fires at the other one they captured.
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

Filbert

Filbert blinks a couple times and looks around perplexed. He is in a cage! Ignoring his terrible headache he tries to remember what happened. He was talking to the other halfling and then felt a bite at his right ankle and then was unable to move. Feeling something around his neck, Filbert raises his hands and realizes he has an iron collar as the one the other halfling did. His first thought is to try and get it out but he decides against it. Maybe the collar is magical and trying to get rid of it he could get hurt. Listening carefully and making less noise possible Filbert checks if the cage has a lock he can pick and get free.

Ugo was scared. The too-bigs came with flashy magics, sharp steel and an even bigger too-big and severely harmed the Masters! That's something he didn't think possible.
He puts a large kettle over the fireplace and puts more water in it than necessary. He also puts a little less firewood than usual; this will delay the process, but if the Masters check they won't be able to blame Ugo, will they?
After peeling a potato and throws it in the kettle, he chops a carrot slowly as he looks at the caged fellow to see if he came back to be able to move and speak.

He misses the first shot.

The injured knocker cries out in Elvish,

"Mercy!"
The second arrow takes it in the chest. It drops to the earth.

Cormac's man, Ned, sidles up to him, looking at the downed knocker.
"Nice work. You think these little buggers got any scratch hidden around here, boss?"

THE KITCHEN

After peeling a potato and throws it in the kettle, he chops a carrot slowly as he looks at the caged fellow to see if he came back to be able to move and speak.

The door shakes as if something bumped it hard on the other side.
Ugo hears the Masters' voices:

''More wood, more wood!"

''Bah, I've no appetite for this joinery work. 'Tis fit for servants, not for our likes."

"And why, pray tell, have we got but one servant left? Someone's appetites..."

"Oh, very droll. Hand me that blasted hammer."

The voices fade away with the receding sound of footsteps.

Ugo sees that the other short one, in the cage, now stirs and pokes about.

The voices reminded Ugo his predicament. While the too-bigs were powerful and could challenge the Masters, they were not here. The Masters were. Yet, an idea crept to Ugo's mind.
Carrying a bowl of gruel to add to the soup, he makes sure the front door is closed and nobody watches through the windows.
Passing near the other short one (was it Filber? Filbert? Something like that) quickly and quietly jabs his hand through the cage's bars and hides a fork under Filbert's leg. Then he moves to the soup as if nothing happened. He steals a glance towards the other short-one but quickly gets his attention towards the soup and cleaning vegetables for the meal.

The Kitchen

Looking around Filbert spots the other halfling cooking and doesn't seem to have noticed that he is conscious. Immediately he searches for his thieves tools to open the cage but realizes that both tools and his weapon are missing. Looking around the room one more time with his enhanced vision manages to see something relatively cool hanging on the wall near the warm oven: his wet backpack and belt. Filbert tries to reach them but he finds it's too far from the cage for him to grab. As thinking how he can escape he sees the other halfling come closer and hiding something in his cage under his foot. Filbert waits for a moment before reaching the item. When Ugo returns to his cooking Filbert uses the fork to open the lock.
