American Horror Story: Hotel

Just started watching this new season! Seems promising in the ... first 5 minutes. I like the grand opulence of the Hotel contrasted by the emptiness on it.

But, I have never, ever seen an hotel receptionist as rude! She didn't call a bell-boy to carry the bags of the tourists, no word of apology for the multiple inconveniences (no cell phone, no Wi-Fi) and masked complains all the time.

About half-way to the episode, and I would say it is definitely darker than the previous seasons. I would say darker than even Asylum. Anyway, The atmosphere of the hotel (not the world outside it) would fit more in the 80s if we go for decadence and substance abuse. Even the dressing and hairstyles remind me of late 80s, early 90s.

OK, I've watched the whole episode. Not too good, not too bad. A bit too extremely provocative for my tastes.

Second episode, 25 mins in: A bit... boring so far. I wonder if "decadent ennui" is the theme of the episode. If so, it makes sense to make it... decadent and boring.

While the episode keeps being kinda boring and pretty meaningless (less than 5 minutes of actual progress so far, 35 mins in the episode) it has... something special. It's surreal.
In much of the episode so far you can't be sure what's happening and what's a dream\hallucination. The lines are blurred.

Finally, the episode starts picking up after the first half. Things start to happen, we start to learn stuff about the condition of some of the tenants and the story of the place. And it also goes into semi-porn again. What's with this season I wonder? So far, AHS was usually blacking out before the "action". Not so for this season. While they don't show a lot during the sex scenes\orgies, they don't leave much to the imagination.

I watched the first episode.

It's definitely darker and raunchier than previous seasons, as you said. And it relies heavily (as AHS has always done) on people making the stupidest choice available to them at all times. But there's something quirky about it I like. I kind of like that we're deep in the supernatural right out of the gate. Last year was too much of just people being evil to other people. Of course a lot of it makes no sense whatsoever, and is geared to shock first and explain later. But again, that's AHS for you.

Also, I feel like I've already watched a show co-written by Tim Minear about a vampire living in an old L.A. hotel. :)

Playing Hotel California right in the 1st episode makes me wonder if the whole thing was inspired by Minear and/or Murphy listening to that song (possibly while under the influence of something...)

And the irony of a creepy hotel being managed by Kathy BATES makes me chuckle too. (And Lady Gaga can act! who knew?)

Well, she is good for that role, of the dark, weird reprobate. Not sure about acting in general.

And I don't like how the show now includes "hot" action while up to now it was mostly "fade-to-black"
