5E Ethereal Empathy

Does the ability to sense emotionally-charged disturbances in areas feel like a class ability to you guys (akin to the Knowledge Domain's level 17 ability Visions of the Past) or a more narrative Background feature (like the Inheritance feature of the Inheritor background)? I'm working on a few Ravenloft-themed subclasses for 5E and was debating about this for a Warlock patron.
