He was [[betrayed]] by Angelique and her husband [[Benjamin Lockwood]] when they began assuming total control of his estate and [[imprisoned]] Jeremiah in his own home. After Victoria tried to bring the matter to the courts, Angelique bribed the magistrate to throw out the case and have Jeremiah declared [[mad]]. Upon Angelique's orders, Victoria was [[kidnapped]], but the servant [[killed]] her too early. Jeremiah saw this and died of a heart attack, but not before [[cursing]] Angelique with "eternal damnation"" for her betrayal.
