Geography

Mubonyete is a domain (Island of Terror) that runs from 225 miles from its northern border to its southern border and 225 miles from its western border to its eastern border. Grasslands dominate the terrain, although there are also the Feathered Marshes along Mubonyete's southeastern tip. It seldom rains, but waterholes do exist and the realm supports a wide variety of wildlife. During the day it can be terribly hot whereas the night is often unexpectedly cold.[2]

Three sovereign nations claim land within Mobonyete. 6 cities, protected by walls, have joined under one government and are known as Dhabo, or the Clustered Kingdoms. Dhabo is on the north side of the domain. The Feathered Marshes hold a 7th, self-governing walled city called Gombasha. Another independent settlement, Kifiru is to the west; this country is home to the Bone Collectors.[2]

Trade routes conect Gombasha and Dhabo. Gombasha trades vegetables and water to Gombasha for metal, precious stones, and ochre.[2]

Government

Both Dhabo and Gombasha are monarchies, but they differ substantially beyond that. Dhabo rotates whom leads all of the Clustered Kingdoms, switching once per three years from and to one of 5 kings and 2 queens. It is also governed through harsh rule; perhaps it is more correctly termed a despotism than a monarchy. In contrast, Queen Nyedzani has established an elaborate code of laws to govern her people in Gombasha.[5]

Although trade goes back and forth between Dhabo and Gombasha, ivory and other products made from dead animals are forbidden from being sold or traded. They are claimed by the Bone Collectors and taken back to Kifiru for blessing before ultimately being handed over to the Bone Citadel.[1]

Language and Culture

The natives of this land tend to keep their hair short. When hair is allowed to grown, it is usually braided. Body piercings and tattoos are used to decorate the body and enhance attractiveness, whereas the design of the robes a person wears designates status within the society.[2]

Although there are permanent homes within the walled cities, there are many nomadic people who travel in groups of 10-70. They create temporary residences comprised of either or both of thatched grass or bricks made of mud. They circle theses buildings with bramble fences known as boma,[2]

Religion is highly important to the people of Mubonyete. Rather than have a polytheistic pantheon of deities, the folk here believe in the orishas embodying everything in the world. From this embodiment comes the need to treat and please the spirit, lest the object of its embodiment come not to be.[5]

Mobonyete's people tend to strongly value family ties, even extended family ties. A group of twenty people may share a hut.[2]
